I have an 04 Forester and the standard speakers are terrible. I have a decent headunit that does 50w RMS.

Don't want a sub of anything like that but the front components are 6.5 inch and the rear coaxials are 5.25 inch.

Any advice on what to buy? I'd like to spend under £150 and then fit myself. I'm sure any speakers would be an upgrade over the 15 year old stuff but thought best to ask.

Rockford Fosgate, Polk and Alpine kept popping up with quite good reviews and not break the bank money.

Don't bother with the rears unless you really care what passengers in the back think.

£150 is a very competitive price point so any speakers from a reputable brand will be good.

6.5" components with tweeters and passive crossovers will work well. It's very important to consider time/budget on installation. Apply plenty of Silent Coat or similar to the inner door skins and use good quality MDF speakers rings (I can advise someone who make 3D printed rings for you application if you'd like), to get the best out of the speakers. If you just replace the stock speakers with new, you'll no doubt be disappointed with the results.

Check that you're not turning the volume up to the point where the amplifier starts to clip (play a test tone, say 1kHz, and you'll hear the change when clipping starts)... this will kill decent speakers far quicker than the insensitive OE rubbish!

Apart from that, as mentioned above, good mounting, sealing and deadening the surrounding metal is almost more important than the speakers themselves.
(My vote is for the Focal Access range, but doing the fronts and the extra work will stretch the budget, a little bit wink ).
