I've been quoted £263 for a new ignition barrel plus £78 (two hours labour) to fit. I've been told they can only get new Barrels form Renault.
I could've gone down the second hand rout but I figured it's always best to go new with certain things.
The car is a Renault Espace MK3.
Is £341 all in a fair price?
What's the procedure with these? do they also change the key?

don't know about a Renault but on a Toyota it's about £70 for the part incl. ignition switch from a dealer (they can produce a part to match your existing key) & an easy change in 1/2 hour.

Even with main dealer mark up that seems steep. eBay has the right switch on for £30 and, given the wiring connector, I wouldn't say it's 2 hours to fit. It may incur extra charges if they have to cut keys or reprogram to the vehicle though.

What’s actually gone wrong, the barrel or the electrics on the back end?

If it’s the electrics you’ll probably find they are the same as a lot of similar aged Lagunas etc
