Hi all,

Probably a pearoast of a pearoast, I'm looking for a HU to fit to my E46 - the OEM stereo is woeful, otherwise I'd fit a bluetooth kit instead, but I need a replacement.

Is there a simple-looking head unit with reasonable audio quality and bluetooth for <£150? There are direct-fit full screen android jobbies about, but they're £250-300, which is a bit steep for a car that I won't use very often.

Lots of single DIN HU's out there which are feature-rich, but they all look like a robot's dildo, and it'll be sitting quite high/centrally on the dash which will annoy me. I've tried this one from Amazon which is configurable. Although it sounded good, the quality of the software was absolute pap and the "buttons" on the left really are just as bold as that to look at, despite changing the colours, awful.

I'm thinking something simple that looks a bit like a Becker Indianapolis:

Continental do a range of truck stereos which would do, but their displays don't dim with headlight detection, so they'll be equally annoying...

I bought a £60 Sony for my E36 a couple of months ago.

Simple looking yet has Bluetooth and even makes and receives calls via my phone.

I bought one of these a short while ago. You can change the display colours to match your dashboard lights.

Not as simple as the Blaupunkt, but only £124...but I've got a Pioneer MVH-X580DAB (no CD) in my old Alfa - and the illumination can be changed in brightness and colour to match the car's orange/red dash/button lighting.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'd found them all but couldn't find a decent review of them.

I'll probably go for the continental, but I'll report how I get on. smile

I have an Alpine CDE-9880R

https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/SingleView/CDE...

Bought it for my E36 M3 maybe 8 year ago. Had it fitted for 3 months and then it's sat in it's box ever since.
I chose it because like you I didn't want anything to fussy, just sound quality and the orange light setting matches the BMW OEM displays.

You can pick up a bluetooth adaptor easily enough.

As I say, it's been sitting in it's box since about 2013 and is surplus, if you are interested?

Some of the Continentals are designed for a truck's 24v system so be careful when ordering.

I have an E46 as well, and the sound isn't great, but all the pictures I have seen of E46's with aftermarket stuff, just don't look right, the original might sound bad, but it looks fantastic.

I know, that sounds a bit fickle, but I don't think I could live with an aftermarket head unit, I'll have to figure out another way of getting a better sound out of it.

Convert the speakers wires to rca and install a decent amp and speakers. Or better still, connect it to a DSP first.

That's tremendously kind, but like Olivergt I've decided not to replace it.

Someone posted in another thread with a bluetooth module that'll connect to the CD changer, so I'll try that. If I'm still gasping for better sound quality then as you suggested a small, separate amp will be needed. Now I've adjusted a bit, it's really not that bad, it just doesn't match up to the HK+Android system in my W211.
