Picked up my Seat Ibiza FR last week and I'm looking into fitting a rear view mirror dash cam and rear view camera, just thought I'd ask if anyone had any suggestions as there are so many on the market.

Ideally 1080p front and 720p rear.

For clarity, when you say Rear View Mirror Dash Cam, do you mean one of those HUGE rear view mirrors with a camera built into it with a separate rear camera, or a normal dash cam with a separate rear view camera?

If it's the former, I've only ever had issues with ones I've interacted with. Sold a load in my previous job and they came back more reliably than a boomerang. Vibrations, suckers being generally poor, shaky cam footage, the list never ended. Bear in mind these weren't chinesium but decent stuff costing £200. My advice would be standard dash cam with separate rear view camera. There's loads to choose from and I'm sure someone will have experience of them. I personally only use a front face Nextbase unit so can't help much I'm afraid.

Thanks for the reply and insight, yeah I mean the big ones that go around the rear view mirror, I've seen some that are help by two rubber straps that go around the existing mirror, they come with a separate rear view camera, they seem pretty good and have some good reviews but they almost seem like they are paid reviews.

I prefer the idea of having something like this and just having it constantly on the rear view camera to still be able to see out the back but not have something stuck to the window.

Surely someone has one? Looking into these myself.

I have an Autovox X2 in my car: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CLSVZ53/ref...

Really good quality and not too difficult to install. Hardest bit is being patient running the wires around the car.

My old man was so impressed he got one too!

It's especially great if your car doesn't a reversing camera, as this comes with one (that records behind you when not in use reversing)

Designed for LHD, won’t suit RHD orientation.

I was trying to find out about this but in the reviews of some of them it says it isn't a problem.

My non-specific experience is that it certainly was on my mirror cam. Unless you affix it upside down.

Next base do a mirror cam, I picked it up in Costco. Works well plenty of suckers and straps to hold it in plus has parking mode via built in battery.

Only issue is you’d need a separate rear cam not sure if it’s compatible with the rear cam nextbase sell.

The X2? I use one in a RHD car and have no issues (and can't see why it would make any difference)

Range of adjustment. If you think about it...

I got one off Amazon Warehouse for 15 quid and it has never failed me. It did come with the rear cam as well but I CBA fitting it to be honest.

Also very good at reducing glare from headlights behind you when driving at night (blue glass) and massive field of vision too.

One of my better bargains.

Well I can confirm the one I bought covers a wide enough angle, satnav built in works well, ADAS not so good, bit temperamental.

Did a search on rear view mirror dash cams and this thread popped out.

I'm wondering now that these things have been on the market for a few years, what are people's views on reliability on the latest offerings?

Are the latest ones fit for purpose?

I'm thinking about getting something like this for my daily run around:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/383496077746?chn=ps
or
https://www.amazon.com/VanTop-Waterproof-Enhanced-...

Those two seemingly getting good reviews by numerous "tech/gadget websites" and offering 1080p for rear view clarity.

I used to have a cheap 'normal' dashcam that had a rear view camera on it, but that was bought from china and as feared it was cheap tat that lasted no more than 2 days before the rear cam failed. It was also claimed "HD" but was no more than about 200 lines of pixels where you could barely make out if it was a motorbike or an HGV that was behind you - those bleeding commies!

So I'm now looking for a rear view mirror option that can also operate like a parking assist camera. (But it has to work this time!) wink

The unique issue, as I mentioned before but people seem to struggle with the required thinking and cant understand, is that pretty much everything is designed for LHD cars, and simply doesnt have the range of adjustment required to look ahead properly.

Add to this that most Chinese vendors seem to struggle with the concept of truth, never mind telling the fking truth, so who knows what real resolution 1080p! will really be, or whether the video will be any better than VGA with 10fps...

Not sure I do get "the range of adjustment" point that you are making to be honest.
Unless I am missing something the mirror dashcams that I am looking at provide a video link from a rear dashcam to the mirror, so therefore the mirror doesn't need to be aligned to reflect back to my eyes in a typical manner that a reflective mirror would have to be in order to see behind. Which means I could align it to point more "forward' for the front dashcam to work as intended.
This should still allow me to see the video feed from the rear dash cam to keep it functional as a rear view mirror.

But I do fully understand your point about the quality of the video feed. I can only go by the youtube reviews which seem to show a decent resolution and provides useful clarity (possibly better clarity due to the camera being position outside of my rear tinted glass).

Made for LHD, they have the camera on a ball type joint on the left hand side of the mirror. When you are sat in the right hand seat with the mirror adjusted so that you can use it, the camera needs to be able to move to the right more than there is adjustment available. Sit in the passenger seat and adjust the mirror and the camera will easily see the road ahead. You can turn the mirror upside down, but it is far from an elegant solution. It looks obviously wrong, and all of the buttons/script and the menus are upside down.

This might not apply to EVERY available camera, but it is a well known issue and I have experienced it on two different types.

Cheers.
Good point made and I will look for RHD options.

In your experience with them, is it not possible to simply rotate the mirror more towards the centre to allow the front camera to have its forward view, and still be able to easily see the rearview video feed?

I presume from the point you make that even with the mirror pointed dead straight ahead that the adjustment on the front camera is not enough to point it to cover the road?

Yes, I ended up with a compromised camera view and a compromised mirror view. The mirrors do tend to be oversized, so you can get by, but a made for the RHD market device would be so much better.

Certainly have no problem with the field of view on mine, front or rear, the mirrors angled towards me like normal as well.
