Back in my youth days I had multiple amps and 6x9s and subs you name it. Was good fun. For a good 10 years I've not run an aftermarket sound system in any cars.

My car has OEM 6x9 speakers above the boot and they've started to play up. So I'm looking to buy a set of 6x9s that would be an improvement over oem, without running them through an amp.

I dug out some 15 year old pioneers I had lying around from the good old days and fitted them, but there is just something lacking. Sound definition is definitely better than OEM was, but there is next to no bass whatsoever.

Can anyone recommend a half decent set of 6x9s that are suitable to be run without an amp? Not looking to make the mrs pants wet I just want some good sound quality and reasonable low frequency performance.

Would also be happy to swap out the door speaks to something more punchy if needed, although the stock ones of those don't seem too bad.

Have you considered an under-seat sub to handle the bass, and that frees up the other speakers for mid/treble

I just can't be bothered with it all to be honest mate. Don't want to run an aftermarket head unit, and don't want to faff around with inline converters to run amps off the oem unit, then all the wiring etc.

Just hoping for a quick easy upgrade to something that I can just screw in and connect. Appreciate that there will be a point in which the quality of speaker will be pointless without an amp, so I guess I need a middle-of-the-road product that isn't overkill but better than what I have?

Just get any new speakers that can fit in the original housings or if you want get any 6x9 and put them in the back if thats your style.

These days sony makes a head unit that has a class d amplifier in it and gives a lot of power to the speakers i think its 45w rms x 4. Thats a lot for a head unit. Along with upgraded speakers it may be enough for you.

If you dont want to change the head unit or add an amp then just adding 6x9s wont make a night and day difference.

The car comes with 6x9s as standard. But they're light, flimsy pieces of st. I just presumed that replacing them with a decent set might see some improvements.

If putting in expensive heavy ones is going to make no difference then I won't bother, because race car rolleyes

Are you sure that you wired them in phase? Try swapping around the speaker connections on one of them and see if it makes a difference.

6 x 9's in a parcel shelf on a car with a boot will generally give more bass than an under seat sub. The entire boot works as a speaker enclosure.

Good question! I'll have a play around with them later and see if it sounds any different.

I just presumed that a 15 year old speak that had been sat in the loft and covered in dust might have lost some of its 'umph'!
