Hello everyone

Are tracking systems worth it even if my insurance company don't require it? I live in the midlands and there has been a significant increase in the number of car thefts around here over the past few years (from what I hear). I have a steering wheel lock already.

I just wanted to know what people think.

it does lower insurance costs. saved £46 a year having a tracker fitted to a 2007 toyota aygo.

In the past, I've had cars that insurers would only cover if they had a Tracker fitted. However, things seem to have changed... Now, fitting a Tracker seems to make no difference to premiums, and generally doesn't seem to be a requirement even on expensive cars.

Should you fit one? I used to think yes...but now I'm not so sure. If your car is stolen without a Tracker, it may never be recovered so you take a hit on the insurance and you get a replacement car (GAP insurance is your friend). If your car is stolen with Tracker, it may still not be found (container = Faraday cage) but if it is it will potentially have a lot of damage so you'll still take a hit on the insurance and you'll be left with a car that will never be the same again and may be harder to sell. So, on balance, probably better not to fit one.

The requirement to fit an approved tracker will vary from insurer to insurer, and from car to car.
