May be in the wrong section, if so feel free to move.

As per the title, a present for Dads birthday. 72 Y/O and a technophobe, so it needs to be very easy to use. Ideally under £100 fitted, we've seen the Halfords HDC100, and the reviews seem OK.

Any thoughts on this one or any other must have models?

Best dashcams here: http://www.techmoan.com/what-is-the-best-dashcam/

I find with my dad that having a 64Gb or 128Gb card is better as older folk "forget" about things.

Best budget is the Yi which can go for as low as £26 on Amazon when the Yi Official Store have a blowout. I have the Yi in the Shed and Mrs V.'s car and I'm really impressed at the daytime and nighttime video quality compared to the £350 Blackvue in my car.

Just bought and fitted two 70mai cams after doing some research. Very good reviews. Easy to fit and all good so far.

I've had loads, Yi are the best by miles. Much higher quality. App on the phone to change settings and download footage straight to phone. Usually around 33 on Amazon. I've fitted loads in family and friends cars

Have two of these and they have been excellent. Not the most subtle to look at what with the case being silver, but a rattlecan of satin black can fix that.

ah, I now see that model's end of line. https://www.amazon.co.uk/YI-Dashboard-Recorder-Rec...

The 70mai I posted above is from the same manufacturer as the Yi and is probably the replacement.

I tried the OldSHark ones that are about £32 on Amazon

They are a decent enough introduction but really they are poor in many ways. They have a dangle mount so wobble around a lot as you drive and you get loads of noise on the recording from the vibration and movement

One failed after no time at all and I needed to have it replaced

No rear face and really if you're going to bother you need front and rear

Interface is clunky and awkward for wife to use

So I swapped them for the Aukey one that mounts direct to the screen so is more subtle, has a rear camera, picture quality is excellent. They were £110 each. However yesterday someone drove into the back of wife (literally left no marks on her car and she is fine) and on inspection all the recordings are corrupted which is infuriating. Also its powered by capacitor which means no parking mode

I think in dashcams you get what you pay for really and I am starting to see why people fork out £400+ for the high end ones.

We settled for one of these in the end -

https://www.halfords.com/technology/dash-cams/dash...

I think Halfords are installing it tomorrow, and happy to feed back thoughts in due course, if anyone's interested?

Budget? That's £115 including the fitting (if you took the Halfords fitting bundle).

The 70mai is £32 and free to fit if you do it yourself.

We got Aukey DR-01 for my dad for £39.99 last year. Planned to get another one for myself, but your option just looks better.
So, I'll be waiting for your reviews!

I’ve fitted three 70mai’s in the past couple of weeks. Easy to fit, work well and look good. App is simple to use and set up. WiFi is remarkably good, better than the BlackVue 750S 2-Ch I use on my main car.

So down the line, how's he got on with it? Value for money?

You know, since we bought it him I'll have to ask. Since he had it installed the subject hasn't come up, so next time I see him I'll be sure to ask and feedback accordingly.

Thinking about a 70mai. Are they easy to hardwire to my wife's F25 X3?
I have trim removal tools etc

I’ve fitted several Garmin mini dashcams recently. No problems, simple to set up and easy to use.

I have the Garmin mini in the rear window of the Passat and it really is excellent. So small and with the app so versatile. I removed the trim to install it and just need a couple of wire holders to neaten the run from the dashcam to where it enters the plastic trim on the headlining.

I got sent an email for this today and I've ordered one. Yi used to sell their dashcams on Amazon and they've become independent. I couldn't see how they could sell their original dashcam for as low as £26 on Amazon and make money. The dashcam I was eyeing up was their Nightscape version which used to sell on Amazon for £69.99. They have it on their own store for £40 including free Europewide delivery:

https://kamistore.eu/products/yi-nightscape-dash-c...

The best bits about this dashcam are:
(1) A capacitor rather than a battery which may go bad in a couple of years.
(2) Image quality - I think the original Yi dashcam has equal quality to my old Blackvue which was over 10 times the price.
