Hi recently purchased a VW Golf 07 plate with an iPod dock in the console by the handbrake, I was told that I can purchase something to convert this so I can use my iPhone instead.
So I’ve purchased this ...

I put the 30pin bit straight into the iPod dock then I slot my iPhone onto the small bit on top..... well I must be doing something wrong because A. It doesn’t do anything and B. When my phone is sat there I can’t even see the screen let alone be able to use it if it did work!

So my question is is there some sort of cable that I need to attach from the iPod dock to the white thing??
Thanks in advance!

Do you have an AUX socket anywhere? You'll be much better off buying a bluetooth adaptor that plugs into the AUX than faffing around with ipod adaptors.

Basically you are trying to do the equivalent of plugging a smart tv stick into an old scart television.

That dock was never designed to work with anything other than old old iPods etc so it’s not surprising it doesn’t work with modern phones.

I’d be ripping the head unit out and buying a good aftermarket one that had Apple carplay or Bluetooth or something

Or you could buy a used iPod off ebay with the 30 pin connector, and copy your music to that.

Yeah, I'd look into a new head unit.

This one is designed to fit exactly into your existing space and has bluetooth, wifi, multimedia functions, sat-nav etc all built in:

Or alternatively you can buy a fitting plate like this which will allow you to fit any aftermarket double-din stereo in its place:
