I am shipping a car from Canada to Germany to spend a few weeks holiday and some track time.

Problem is that the Nav system is not set up for Europe. Can use phone nav but the data costs would be severe

So will go to Amazon UK and get a Garmin or TomTom. Do these systems automatically cover Western Europe right out of the box or are they UK only? My NA systems all cover entire USS and Canada for instance.

Any help would he much appreciated.

Buy a European sim and use Google maps.

Alternatively download the appropriate Google maps to your phone and then you won't need the data

If you buy a garmin or Tom Tom you need to make sure it has Western Europe maps. The Satnavs can be bought with just UK maps or with Europe maps.

Whereabouts in DE are you coming into? If you’re shipping the car in, I assume you’re coming in through Europort/Rotterdam?

I’m in NL most weeks, and can happily let you have an EU-wide tomtom for a few weeks of use - you’re likely going past me on the way into DE if coming in as above.

PM me if you’re interested.

Our tomtom has full European maps. The cheaper ones may not though, read the adverts. smile

Much appreciated and very kind of you!...as it happens, the plan is to containerize the car, load in Toronto, train to Halifax, ship to Rotterdam, container on truck to Frankfurt, and to meet it there as my flight will get into Frankfurt.. Will do a few weeks of my customary travel, and then finish at Nordschleife and Spasmile...

Here Maps (Android) can use offline maps, download the sections you need, set app to 'offline.' I keep a 7" Android tablet in the car with Here Maps, as it's easier than squinting at a phone screen.

If you already have/borrow any Garmin they can also use the free OpenStreetMaps tiles, downloaded from here on a PC and installed on an SD card inserted into the Garmin.

Google Maps can be used offline on a phone.
