do you ever need to upgrade manufacturers ICE software?

I have a 2017 amarok, with the standard head unit that allows phone controls via android auto, which is very handy. Recently my phone OS got upgraded to pie and I've noticed that it sometimes doesn't send WhatsApp messages. Not had such a modern piece of ICE kit before, so just wondered if the head unit software ever needs to be updated? There is an SD card slot.

It has to be done by vw. If you just ask for an update they will charge you but if you report a fault they might update it (but more often than not they will just hard reset it)

It should be under warranty, so if there is a known problem VW should update it free of charge.
