Has anyone bought or taken a good look at this yet? Pioneer website

It's £109.

It provides a cradle for your phone and buttons on the unit for shortcuts to music/messages/maps. It doesn't have wireless charging but there is a fast charge USB on the front so you could use a short cable between unit and phone.

I was going to go for a normal stereo with DAB/BT and a separate cradle for phone navigation and Spotify - but I can't decide whether this is a better and tidier solution or just a bit too gimmicky.

Not seen that before. I've been trying to find something in single DIN that will have some decent phone connectivity to go in my Beetle. That looks to be a good solution. I was looking at single DIN folding screens with carplay but they are a serious amount of money for a weekend car! Presumably this can be used as a normal radio without the phone being present/connected?

Doesn't really help you, sorry, but I will be checking this out further, thanks!

On offer currently at Halfords for £85. Think I might pop in over the weekend and have a look....

That looks very good, always surprised by how much functionality you can get for your money these days.

Indeed. I was looking at this Alpine https://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/car-... as it has car play but still only uses a single DIN slot, but it seems a bit excessive in terms of price and I suspect a big of magnet for trouble (especially in an old car). As far as I can tell the Pioneer, with the app, has the same functionality but for 12% of the price! I just want to see one in the flesh before paying my money.

NB Pioneer offer a parking sensor kit with display on your phone while using this unit for about £60!

The OP in this Readers' Car thread (see bottom of page) has fitted one and seems to rate it.

I've recently purchased one and fitted it into my car.

I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed. It's quick, easy to use and there is zero lag. The phone mount is very sturdy (my car has pretty stiff suspension and I was expecting movement, but there is none). The sound is a vast improvement on my old Alpine head unit of the 90's, with many functions to customise your sound.

For the price, I think nothing beats it. The display on the Pioneer unit is rather old school, but that is my only negative. It's not even noticeable once my phone is in the mount.

Being able to control your apps via the one touch buttons on the head unit is also a massive plus.

One thing I will mention. My car is loud and with very little creature comforts / noise insulation. The mic picks up my exhaust note quite a lot and I have to pull over if I want to make a call. But, the car this Pioneer is in isn't about making calls on the road, so I'm happy :-)

Recommend.

Sold mine couldn’t get on with it ... having to reach into your pocket for your phone every time you got in the car. Replaced it with a Joying 6.2 single din .... wow really good piece of kit

I have recently fitted one into my Smart Roadster. Sound quality is pretty good from what I can tell (the Roadster is not conducive to audiophile type listening).

The functionality is good, although I have not tried all the features. Everything I have tried works nicely. Sometimes it does not connect to the app, but restarting it on the phone works okay.

Be wary of where the phone will sit in your car. In mine the phone covers the heater controls - no biggie as the holder is very sturdy and I can fold the phone down and change the heater settings.

I find some settings (speedo and altitude) keep changing back to metric which is a bit of a pain. Also I have my phone in a wallet so it means getting the phone out each time - although you can leave the phone out and it will continue doing the last operation (generally Radio 2 for me! smile )

Otherwise, for the price it is very good - I paid £85 at Halfords and fitted myself. All very straight forward.

Just ordered one - hoping its fiddlable enough that I can make it blend in with the 190E interior.

If not, I'll whack it in the FTO with an adaptor plate...
