Ayone know about in-car DVD players?

For 7 years we've had a DVD system in our car with infra-red headsets. It has been brilliant, but a month ago one side lost sound.

The original fitter put in a new DVD player (£300) and sent us on our way, but within two uses the left screen lost sound on one side of the headphones.

The fitter then said, "must be the screen, what you need is FM headphones". So he has fitted FM headphones (£72), but the sound quality is poor. Speech sounds robotic.

Anyone know how to fix it please? I am beginning to become irritated with it to be honest.

FM headphones in the car are shocking usually too quiet also pickup noise.
