I've bought a 50cm LED strip that has red and black wires.

I have some twin-core cable to extend the wires.

How can I connect the strip to a headlight, so the strip comes on when the headlight does?

If you have to ask this question then :

No professional worth their salt would go near these things, they aren't great.
However, they are simple to use and will do exactly what you want.

Wire your LED strip in parallel with existing headlight. Assuming you have an H4 or similar bulb with both dipped and main beam, try the following:

1/ Loosen any nut or screw on the engine, poke the black wire of the LED strip under the screw head and retighten.
2/ Remove the headlight bulb connector. Remove the bulb.
3/ Turn headlight on to dipped beam.
4/ Touch the LED strip red wire on each of the headlight connector terminals one at a time.
5/ When the LED strip lights, use a ScotchLok to connect the red wire to the wire coming out the back of the headlight connector. Leave at least an inch and a half between headlight connector and Scotchlok.
6/ Remove black wire from engine, retighten screw.
7/ Touch the black wire on each of the headlight connector terminals one at a time until the LED strip lights.
8/ Use a Scotchlok to connect the black wire to the wire coming out of the headlight connector.
9/ Replace the bulb.
10/ Drink beer, congratulate self on job jobbed.
