Ford Escort 55 1998 petrol

Last weekend I left my usual key at work, i used the spare to drive the car home, no problem. trouble is this key the handle spins on the metal key. I couldnt get enough traction on it to turn the key again. I took off the plastic piece and gently tried to turn the key with some pliers. It did'nt start and i realised this was because of the now separated transponder chip. No problem i cancelled what i was about to do. I retrieved the usual key from work, went home and tried to start the van. no joy. Fuel pump primes. i can hear a relay click in the engine bay. Lights, clock, fans, horn, hazards, wipers all work. However LED below the clock that should come on and flash, or deliver a fault code - is dead, nothing. The van is old and will need some cash spent on it for its next MOT. So frankly its a simple fix or replace the whole van. Pity because its only done 40,000 miles. But has rusty sills. Which i was going to fix but if this is a trailer to a ford dealer and bills like 250 quid its not worth the repair. I only drive it to the station every day. Any ideas or is it for the scrappy? ive checked fuses in the cabin, I have tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours.
