Golf 2.0 TDI electronic parking brake failed?
Discussion
Hi all,
I have a 67 plate Golf. Been using it without issue for 7 months. Parked up yesterday, locked the car using key fob and went into a house, chatted for around 5 mins.
Heard a car alarm and looked to see my car going backards down the road. I chased it and after travelling the distance of 8 houses it came to rest against a lamp post.
The lady whose house is adjacent to the lamp post has CCTV which clearly shows my car parked up for the 5 mins or so mentioned above.
Seems like the brake failed? Any ideas?

Had you manually taken the hand brake off before hand? sometimes I manage to turn off the auto park, not sure how but I'm sure it's something I've done by taking it off myself. If I have my seatbelt on when I want to drive away it's always fine.
I do leave in gear also just to be sure

Hi,
I had not been for a long drive and I did not touch either of the buttons.
I have parked the car in the same spot many many times and touched nothing and never had a problem.
The car goes in for repair at a repair shop this week and they are going to check the handbrake.
Next week it is booked to go back to the VW dealer for them to have a look too.

Surely if you had ''manually turned the handbrake off before hand'' as mcg_ suggests, the car would have rolled away sooner? You mentioned it was parked up for 5 minutes before it rolled.. which to me indicates a possible handbrake failure. Although leaving it in gear is a good way to prevent things like this from happening, it does seem a little dated and it shouldn't have to be done with newer cars IMO.
Sorry about your misfortune, though.. hopefully the damage isn't too bad.

Hi,
The damage is not too bad. Been in to be assessed today - new bumper, cross member, number plate and rear parking sensor.
That's the part I can't understand - how it sat for so long before it moved.
I wondered if the alarm going off may have affected the handbrake?
It also seems extremely dangerous that the car can be parked up and LOCKED and still drift off down the road?
The garage which is carrying out the repairs are going to scan to see if they can locate any errors with the brake.
If there is not a fault then I am at a loss to understand what has happened - I have not done anything different to how I have been parking the car up for the past 7 months.
I have now started to put the car in gear though when it is stood.

The other thing I am interested in is the scanning process.
About 6 months back (the car was 1 month old) a message appeared on the dash saying something like "Brake Failure" with an orange exclamation mark.
I booked the car in with the dealer I bought it from and when I arrived a chap in a suit came out and suggested we drive around the lock.
He said there was nothing wrong with the handbrake and that "someone may have caught the button, it's quite common for lady's handbags to do that".
So, no further action was taken by the garage and I was sent on my way.
Will the scanner next week pick up that error?
