My neighbour has a 2004 (54 plate) Volvo V50 estate. The main ECU has failed and the car won;t start. He can find a replacement ECU but Volvo say that the ECU "has to be programmed by us using the car's serial number". The cost is over £2k, which clearly is not worth it for such an old car. Is anyone aware of a simple fix - e.g. are these ECUs used in other makes / models. Anyone know of an independent specialist near St Albans who could do this at a more reasonable cost.

This company does that type of thing. Your neighbour could contact them to ask about the serial number mapping (I think it might be the immobilser codes)

Or here which seems to have much better reviews. Usually with these places you send off your ECU and they send back a refurbished replacement one
