I'm replacing the audio system in my newly purchased chariot and would like a full android head unit but something with decent sound quality. I'm aware of the android auto units but would like the ability to run apps on the head unit which I dont think android auto units have the capability to do. One of the main reasons for swapping out the existing alpine unit is due to poor functionality but I also dont want to sacrifice any sound quality.

The android head unit world seems swamped with cheap imported units but are any f them actually any good?

I had a parrot asteroid smart for a while. About £300 on ebay.

Seemed pretty good, but its an old version of android.
ran Torque, USB Mp3s, Phone, free nav etc

swapped it for a flip out single din Pioneer, as that fitted the car better, and I didn't have to modify the dash like I did for the Parrot.

I've got a Pumpkin android unit from Amazon in my megane track car, mainly so I can run Torque, Google Maps and Harry's LapTimer - it works well, but I can't comment on sound quality. It's an older version of:

I know 2 people now who have swapped the standard head units in Boxsters ( one a 968, the other a Gen 2 987 ) for Xtrons from ebay. I'm interested in the ability of these things, they're Android based and seem to couple a massive amount of features with a low price and reliability.

The guy with the 986 is on here and has a long thread running about the car, with several pages focussed on the head unit. Worth a read. Seriously considering one now.

Is Android Auto the best way to go now? - Pioneer have a good choice of double DINs. Have just bought single din one. with motorised screen. and the Android Auto / Apple Car play makes it like an OEM fit
