Waze - android auto app

Hi all

I am using the android auto APP which uses my phone screen for android auto, not an in-car infotainment system
When I use android auto via my mums VW tiguan I am able to use waze by clicking the maps button again and switching from google maps to waze. On my phone app whilst running on bluetooth to a head unit in my fiesta I can't swap to waze, only can use google maps which is quite annoying. I can swap audio apps ie spotify, tunein radio etc so it isn't an issue where I can't swap app

Any ideas?
