Glitchy head unit
Discussion
I recently installed a Sony Xplod Bluetooth head unit in my Alfa, which required me to source a switched 12v feed from the cigarette lighter. I’ve tested this connection over and over and it’s always had consistent power. But...
More and more frequently the head unit has been throwing a wobbler, speakers cutting out and popping back in, tracks skipping and sticking on fast forward (exactly as if the button is stuck and in all functions, ie when set to fm it will scroll frequencies endlessly), and the whole unit dying upon going over any bumps in the road or sharp turns/stops.
I feel like the issues are far more likely to be as a result of my shambolic wiring than the head unit itself, and I can make sense of the switched 12v feed cutting out over bumps etc causing the head unit to lose power, but I’m at a loss to explain why that would cause all the other jiggerypokery like the random changing of tracks and stuck button symptoms. Can this be explained by dodgy wiring or is the head unit borked? Applying pressure to the faceplate seems to sort it, but that doesn’t really exclude it being either issue (head unit has detachable faceplate with dubious connection).
Anyone more technically minded than me have any idea where the issue is likely to be?
