I regularly hear people recommending Waze app.

Have tried it a couple of times over the years but can't really get on with it. Am I missing something?

The map itself isn't particulally pretty of smart looking. It's almost cartoon like, much like the silly character icons you see which are other users.
The thing that really got me though was the whole thing is based on it being 'social' and people sharing information on their phones.

Surely pissing about with your phone whilst driving is not a good thing.

I think I tried it once. It's wasn't even a single tap, it required several inputs to say exactly what sort of issue was causing the problem.
Seemed a real faff never mind dangerous.

Has it changed or does it still require you to play with your phone whilst driving?
Google maps Navigation is really excellent these days, it would have to be a good offering to get me to change from that or Co-Pilot.

I use Waze and today I slowed down for the police alert ahead. It was a speed camera van on a bridge obscured by a long left hander ahead. Waze does have a very poor looking interface but it saves my bacon regularly !

Not sure why you’re asking, it’s obvious from your attitude you don’t want to like it so don’t use it. It’s just satnav, use the one you like and get on with life.

The interface is childish & naff, it's no where near as clear and readable ( at a glance) as Google maps & all round seems designed for a 12 year old.... But, its about the closest thing to an speed van detector and worth it for that alone!

It’s got some major advantages over the likes of google maps. Main one for me is the way it resolves routes using real time traffic speed data from other waze users. I don’t think any other system recognizes traffic issues as quickly and effectively.

My main concern is having to use your phone whilst driving.

I've yet to hear any fans say there is another way, so I can only assume that is what is required.

Big benefit is the 'live' data on traffic and camera vans but I imagine in the near future both be less of an issue. SPECS for the first and car to car data for the 2nd. Regardless, Camara vans are usually only in place for a short period of time, certainly in this area anyway. Not sure the Waze data would be of benefit.

I've been using Waze recently, seems very good both with route planning and with hazard notification. Hardly ever need to touch it when on the move. If you think it's risky to touch it, the answer's simple - don't.

My man I think it is set up so passengers can add events etc on the move. The amount of people I see adding them themselves though.

Used it on way to the ring last year and was a lot more upto date than the built in 2017/2018 maps I had in car. warned me about a few mobile camera's as well that Google maps wouldn't of done.

Came in really useful for us when travelling up from SW France to Paris Charles De Gaulle airport to catch a long-haul flight as it alerted us to a problem on the autoroute ahead and diverted us off at the next junction and back on just before Orleans. It saved us hours from being stuck in the tailback, we later found out that it was a serious accident where three teenagers had died after they had gone through the central reservation and hit a truck, the autoroute was still closed the following day.

You don't have to use your phone while driving. Set your destination, select a route, drive. That's it.

Sorry, but I don't think you understand how to use the app.

Good app and 90% of the time has given a reliable and fast route. Like the automatic speed zone icon too.

I like the idea of this, and I don't mind the interface, but when I try and connect it to my Leon via Android Auto it just grinds to a halt, won't ever give me a route or anything. Has anyone else run into this problem?

That's my point!

Would it work effectively if everyone did the above?

The routing around traffic jams would still work - it is always crowd sourcing traffic speed from users, whether they 'mark' a traffic jam manually or not.

I like it except when it guides me down small side roads that cross main roads. e.g.

--> ====¦¦¦¦==== --> where the == is a side road and the ¦¦¦¦ is a main road that would be impossible at rush hour.

It's cracking when paired with an Android Auto headunit (if your chosen phone is an Android device, of course).

The camera notifications are worth the outlay alone.

We are of to Lanzarote at the start of April

Is it possible to use Waze abroad? I'm hoping I can use it offline...
