Hi,

We regularly fit CAN bus interfaces to vehicles for the purpose of installing taxi meters and the output pulse frequency is determined by the vehicle type. Does anyone know if there is a CAN bus device where we can programme the output pulse to a specific value?

Cheers

How much are you looking to spend?

There are lots of devices but they're generally for development use so are around £1k minimum.

Racelogic DAC01
Influx K Volt

They might be a little overkill though. Racelogic also do other boxes for this but I'm not sure they are programmable to change the output scaling.

Are you interpreting an existing CAN message or using diagnostics (OBD2) to request the speed value? The 2 above will only do the former.

If you need to do the latter then there is a box by a company called KMT and one by Duetto Engineering.

Or... If you fancy a challenge you could make something up using an Arduino or similar. Parts would probably be less than £100 but you'd need to know what you're doing.

CANm8 are another company worth asking.

Do you want to change the message that is being sent from the car?

Yes, this is to fit a taxi meter but we cannot change the pulse on the meter so we need to match the pulse to a meter that is already certified and sealed

Do you know the structure of the vehicle CAN message?

What frequency of pulse do you need?

Another option would be to use a CAN gateway to change the message to the scaling you need, but it depends how your existing "CAN to pulse" box works as it might not be so easy to fool.

Or another box to change your current pulse to a different frequency.
E.g. https://synectic.co.uk/product/sy024-frequency-mul...

This might be easier if you don't know the CAN message.

Is this a one off or are there lots to do?

An convertor box would be my recommended way of doing it, especially if you don't know what other ECUs are subscribed to that message on the CAN bus.
