I don't know much about these, but a couple of old classics' theft threads recently and sparked interest

Apparently, any un authorised movement and you receive txts and pin point updates on Google Maps as to the location and movement

Can anyone recommend such a device, and are they easy to fit?

Cheers

I bought this one, I think you can find them cheaper from China but this one is UK based and appears to be well supported. I'm sure they're all the same.

Easy to install with either magnets or whatever else you want to use. Should be easy to connect to the 12v power but I just charge the battery and leave it hidden in my racing car

Am pleased that you started the thread on GPS trackers because the recent thefts of classic cars has made me think about a tracker and certainly the prices have dropped quite substantially since I last enquired many years ago.

I found this item on Ebay which looks very interesting and it comes pre-configured and ready to go straight out of the box. Only thing I think will be required is the hard-wire kit because it looks like the batteries fitted in these units only last for a few days which isn't much good if the car is parked up in the garage for weeks on end.

Am going to have to do some more research!

I need to do some research as I don't understand how they even work...

SIM or no SIM??

This one is mentioned in the RS2000 theft thread - £17

I was looking at pet ones a while ago, but they seemed very expensive as soon as they became usable.

eg. I want to log on my phone and see where the dogs are. Should be dead simple.

Be aware they are a piece of piss to make useless:

It even has a cigarette plug power source!

Ever wonder why so many cars with trackers end up piled up in containers for Africa?

Totally agree with the melon twister on this, a complete waste of money! Plug in the jammer, drive the vehicle to a metal container then use a cheap generic spy bug finder to go over the car and find where the trackers have been positioned before stamping on them several times , just google GPS jammer or mobile phone blocker

I guess they are better than nothing and if any opportunist/kids nick it they will be great, but any professional or switched on thief will have any trackers sorted in seconds

Makes me laugh one of the biggest markets for trackers now is to bypass employee tracking systems on company vehicles. Bit stupid, as I have seen people get sacked for gross misconduct all because they wanted to sneak an odd trip to the bookies in the company van and blocked the tracker!

Shirley, most opportunist thieves wouldn't use a jammer? Especially if they are unaware that one was fitted to the car?

I'm pleased that the OP started this thread. I started looking at these trackers on eBay for the first time yesterday.

Not many cars (with a value worth using a tracker for) are stolen now as part of opportune theft though. It's always stolen to order, that type of criminal is always going to be prepared.

Fair point.

Even some of the cheapest trackers these days have jammer detection built-in and can then switch to cell triangulation to determine position.

Of course, if the thief also has a GSM jammer, that feature could be defeated as well but I agree with the principle that whatever measure you might go to to protect your car, someone determined enough could overcome it if they really wanted to.

For the sake of spending £100 or so, it's still worth fitting a tracker though, because your dumb thief won't know or care about jammers.

I've got trackers on cars, cats and even an elderly relative who wanders off from time to time. Wouldn't be without them!

Which tracker do you use with your cars?

Better than not having one, but if you are capable of fitting one of these ebays jobs, then you'll not have a problem, placing a switch inline with the cigarette plug power supply, as this could help prevent the easy use of a jammer wink

In order for a tracker to reduce/affect insurance premium, does it have to be 'professionally' installed and certified?

I don't think that's taken much into consideration now is it?

Trackers seem to be much more of a rarer thing now than say 10 years ago

I've been considering one of those for a while but never got around to buying one. At that price, it's too good to ignore, even if it can be jammed. I just ordered one.
