Hi guys,

The ticking noise on tuscan now quite a bit louder and very noticable. It seems to come and go quite a bit. I'm now thinking that it could be the tappets or the timing chain. Does the S6 engine have a tensioner at all, maybe there problem with it and it hiting casing?

It sounds like loud sewing machine but as soon as engage clutch and the revs drop to 1000rpm the noise stops. It's such an annoying sound!! Any ideas?

Could be any number of things, but with the Speed 6 a loud tapping is an indication that it's spat a shim/follower and it's about to crap itself big time.

Get it recovered to a specialist as driving it may end up killing the engine beyond repair.

Could be as simple as a failing radio/stereo suppressor. Were you listening to or had your stereo on, sometimes the electronic interference from a dodgy suppressor can sound like a washing machine travelling toward spin cycle through the speakers as revs rise. Just trying to be optomistice but worth a thought.

Are you sure it is the engine?

I ask because I tried for ages to locate a rattle/knocking noise I THOUGH was the engine but it turned out to be front break pads moving in the calipers.

I would suggest taking the rocker cover off and having a look, I have the same problem but nothing to bench mark against.

Without hearing it its hard to say, it might be the normal S6 grumble or not. If you are unsure get it recovered to a TVR garage and have it checked. Look at it this way, £100 (ish) for recovery to the garage £200 (ish) to pop the cam cover and check the tappets and see whats going on in there; OR the alternative is ignore it and the engine *might* go pop and then you are in to the thick end of £6000 for a rebuild.

Even if you end up feeling a right plank because the garage tells you there is nothing wrong and TADTS! I would take this option every time.

I am not sure who there is in Yorkshire that is a trusted TVR specialist but somebody will tell you who to go to. I know of RaceProved in Sheffield/South Yorks they offer collection too. Their number is 0114 2692027

echo whats been said, get it to a specialist (dont run it). Honestly, you want to catch if before that happens.

Could be all sort from a loose chain to a big end bearing....and a number of things in between. If it is the top end, and you catch it before the tappet goes through the engine you will probably avoid a bottom end build which will hikes costs...

Hi guys,

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for the insight... it looks like i'll have to cross my fingers big time!!

It's booked in with Richard Thorpe at RT racing in Sheffield this weekend so he's going to get to the bottomw of it. I'm a bit stuck of how to get it there without driving it.

Does anyone know a good recovery person that will work on a Saturday in South Yorkshire??

There are two timing chains that can be tensioned, yes the chains can rattle on the casing or a worn tensioner, most prob a half time bearing.

Common noise's can also be exhaust manifold gaskets or with your description a clutch release bearing.
There are plenty of other components that can rattle in the speed 6 engine, followers, cams, bearings etc, so the list goes on and on.

Take it to TVR Power, Str8six, Race Proved (near you)

Good luck

Hi guys,

Got it recovered by a guy names CLiff from Sheffield. He took it the 25 or so miles to the garage and charged me £45; fair price I thought.

Richard has looked at the top of engine and said he doesn't think there's anything wrong with it, it's having his Gold level serivce at the minute and also the shims and tappets done. Hopefully it'll be like new when it comes back.

I'll let you know what it's like this weekend when I pick it up.

cheers,

Dave

Check the vents on the top of the dash, one of mine was loose and made it sound like the engine rattling. Even confused some mechanics.

Hi guys,

Got the tuscan back couple of weeks ago. No shims had been lost, tappets were slightly off but not by much. The noise is still there but I notice it less now I know that it is not a problem. I'm prettly sure that it could do with a new exhaust manifold gasket fitting... does anyone know where I could get one (or two if it comes one per exhaust).

Cheers! Dave

Good to hear nothing was amiss. TVR's can drive you a little crazy sometimes can't they.

One thing to check - is it one of your butterfly valves? My butterfly spindles had worn the throttle body and that vibrating against the throttle body ever so slightly at idle, obviously it stopped elsewhere in the rev range.

I shortly changed to roller bearing TB's but it was a definite and unnerving chink while the engine was idling...

Hi guys,

Car still running fine; only use it once every few weeks. Still a bit ticky sound from engine but is probably just supposed to sound like that. Suspect it is something like noisy injector but not worried about it. Had 155mph out of it the other day before I backed off so can't be bad

Thanks for the info biggrin

Great news,

You do get a bit paranoid driving the SP6 as every noise seems to have me panicking, but I have learned just to drive it and enjoy it, It really is a great engine when on song.
