I want to remove the cam cover to get it powder coated, do I have to remove the spark plugs to get the cover off? and what silicone do you recommend for sealing it back together.

I have taken the spark plug cover of and labelled the HT leads to match each plug, but I don't have a tool that will fit the plugs.

No need to take plugs out

Re-seal with very thin smear of RTV...dont go mad or you'll get beads of the stuff hang out over the inside edge and possibly fall off and block oil ways...not good. If you have the gear, make a cardboard gasket

I'm planning to do the same thing, but then fit a racing green gasket instead of using silican:

Has anyone else had experience of using this gasket?

Yep. Not great IMO. You'll need to glue it to the cam cover or run the risk of it "squeezing" out between the bolts if you even think about tightening the cover bolts. It gets very soft when hot. I gave up and cut one from gasket card myself...then stacked 2 on top of each other. Works a treat and no sealant required.

Mine lasted about 4 weeks before failed (and was squished mostly out the sides too)

It almost gave me a heart attack when it failed at a petrol station.

It managed to unseal itself just at a point over the exhausts manifold. A nice fine mist of oil hit the exhaust as the pressures in the engine changed (as the car was off) - not fun when your filling up the car and wonder where the smell of burning is coming from, then to turn and notice swathes of black smoke from the engine bay.. frownfrown

I've never gone for the fire extinguisher as quick in my life..

Good information, what did you replace it with?

Nothing, just standard bounding - It was being sent back for checking or "repair", actually I'm still owed the £80 from my servicer - thanks for reminding me :P

There might be room for errors when installing the RG solution, but when done properly there is no need for concern.

Installed it on a couple of cars and the best way is as already mentioned to glue it to the cover to avoid it to slip ou of place when you install it to the head.

Björn.
