As a lower cost alternative to plasma ceramic coating, anyone have any words of wisdom about exhaust wrap on speed6 manifolds?

I'd wondered about this, as I had it on my Impreza where it made the exhaust downpipe cool enough to touch - I wouldn't try that on a Speed 6!

However, I think the TVR manifolds are not stainless steel and so may rust. I've read that apparently the heat wrap could hold moisture and make this worse.

Also imagine the hassle of wrapping them whilst on the car.

Ive found that heat rap is ok if there is plenty of air around the manifold
but in a confined space of the s6 bay i would not recommened it as after a while it will go brittle and turn to dust.

Just did that on mine while the engine was out:

The ceramic coating to be honest looked good when new, but ha no significant effect regarding the temperature. Now, with the wrap on, you can even touch the surface. So no need to worry about the cables any more.

Long time effect? We will see. They tend to say, that the manifold will corrode very quickly, stainless steel or not, the sour mixture and the additional temperature must have an effect. I will see. Got a spare st of manifolds if the worst should happen.

Did I mention that this was really a bugger to get done?

Oh, and engine bay much quiter now.

Regards,
Björn.

GOOD MAN !

Thanks for the feedback.

Guessed it was a buggar...the pipes are soooo close in places...did you just loop out over both pipes in places where they cross ?

Björn, that looks quite scary but I assume this is effectively reducing temperature (I used this some time ago in an other car). How much tape did you use?

Cheers, Ulf

Ulf,

It took about 45 metres to get it done. There are several sellers on ebay. To get it fixed properly you´ll need some stainless steal cable ties.

Björn.

Wasn't there something on here a while ago about the danger of doing this? Either to do with cracking, or the fact that if you stop the heat disipating at the manifold there would be problems elsewhere?

Of course, I might be making it up....

It will make the rest of the exhaust system hotter down stream as the heat has to dissipate somewhere. It would be an idea to keep an eye on additional heat management along the exhaust pipe length.

They're done.
Tricky job! Used just under 20m of 50mm wrap. Used some nice dark grey stuff...boy is it tough, but only 1.5mm thick so much easier tho threat under the tight points. You really need to wear gloves when doing this...I did one pipe without them and can still feel some glass fibres in my hands the day after.
Now to bolt to head.

Looks neat thumbup

Do you have heat protection between the cats and the chassis? I'm thinking mainly of this thread:-
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Would it be possible / realistic to also wrap the Cats, as they'll probably get even hotter now? Then again, if they're also wrapped maybe they'd get too hot inside.

I dont, but then my chassis doesnt look anything like as bad as that chassis. But that ally heat shield is neat, I like that idea. This job expands to fill the willpower available smile
