Got really hacked off about the amount of oil in the sump when changing the oil in the speed six. My drain plug is right at the back covered by the bell housing well not any more!!!. Jacked the car up at the front dropped the oil in the tank and while this was draining i took to the bell housing with a die grinder. With the oil nice and warm i got another 4ltrs out of the sump. Now im happy that when i fill her up its not mixing with all the old stuff , granted your not going to get it all out but boy does it run nice now , got 69 psi when cold dropping to around 18-24 psi when hot at idle.

Thanks

Won't that let quite a bit of water, oil, road grime up onto the clutch...
I guess it's pretty open anyway but this is a new level of "open" surely
Idea is sound in principal. I'm busy doing a top end rebuild and pulling out the scavenge pump liberated .6 ltr of nasty old oil

Had a look at mine the other week, the plug looked like it had never been undone, and with not much room to spare I wasn't going to try a half ased job.

I ended up just replacing the 6l in the tank. But I too saw an improvment in oil pressure (which were good to start with).
From 22 hot idle to 28, and 57 to 68 when cold running (2500rpm ish). With the oft slated 0W-40 Mobil 1.
Though I thought it might have been the new oil filter, as I had changed suppliers from last time (RG to Power) and the filter is a differnt make.

I agree with Pete about the water getting in, but well done!! This has given me an idea.

1. Cut back the bell housing just enough and flatten off the outer surface.
2. Make an Ally cover plate bent, round at the front and profiled to cover gap that used to be present between the sump and the bell housing.
3. Hold it in place with a couple of M4s (or there abouts) onto the bell housing. The housing should be thick enough to take a non-load bearing thread.

Result: Easy access to oil drain and clutch more protected from the outside world.

Yes i cannot see the point of doing a oil change and mixing good 10/50 with ester with stty old stuff , ive now made a rubber backed plate and tapped 4 m6 threads in the bell housing so now no water/muck/ grit will get in. From limited memory its a 1/2 key that fits.

Sorry oil pressure im seeing around 6-8 psi improvment after drain all the oil out of the sump. Oil wise ive been on Silco 10/50 with ester for the last 3 changes wouldnt use anything any thinner it just uses it quicker than you can pour it in the top. The engine is
more happy on the thicker stuff and i dont care what anybody eles has to say .
