Anyone have slightly above average smoke coming from their car? 4.0 cerb is quite smokey, but it all appears to be running ok, and had a service 100 miles ago. It was sitting around for 7-8 months before I bought it.

What would cause this?

Well... Not that I can see, but it has only just had an oil change so I am closely monitoring that.

If its smokie on start up it could be the guides if it smokes when you decelerate on over run it could be the rings keep an eye on your oil consumption i would use 15/50 semi synthetic other oils are to thin and increase oil consumption in my opinion.

Give Richard at dulfords a bell.

Will cost me around £2500 with re-con'd head, new valves, springs, guides, fingers etc including labour

The head is on an exchange basis but for the price I can't complain at all. He showed me their design of the fingers and they look really good.

The top S6 engine builders will disagree - anything with a higher viscosity than 5W will flow a little less than ideal, and it's flow at least as much as pressure that preserves the life of your key components - main bearings etc. smile

What would be a recommended grade then? Everyone says something different?

STR8SIX specialise in S6 rebuilds & have had no issues to date, they recommend Mobil SyntS 5w/40.

Tvr recommended mobil 1 0w 40w that's what I use.
As an engineer myself I know it's extremely important to use the correct grade oil with the correct viscosity span through it's temperature range.

Absolutely.

I'm sure you're unaware of this but I was quoting the recc from the professional engine builder that was employed by the factory before it's demise, to rebuild failed S6 engines so they didn't fail again. smile
