had the Sag on track last week, it was running really well, stoped for lunch, jumped back in for next session and the engine is seized, taken the spark plugs out the 2 nearest the rear of the car soaking wet, turned it over and 2 jets of water spayed out, so head gasket is knackered do you think anything else would have broken, is it time for a total rebuild?

Was that your Sag I saw at Neil Garner's today? He had a yellow one in with a blown head gasket, and was talking me out of buying a Tuscan unless I feel wealthy!

Sorry hear that, lets hope its not too major! Neil reckons a trans plant for a Chevy LS8 (?) would be good!

A lot of people respect Neil's Opinion. I suspect he was talking in relative terms. A Tuscan is much more likely to need expensive engine work than my G33 or a Griff etc.

Well I was told at my most recent service that my engine needed a top end rebuild. I took it to TVR Power for a second opinion and they done a crank pressure test and told me to go enjoy my car.

Sorry to hear this. My head gasket went on a track day back in early 2006. Not fun, but it shouldn't be too expensive to fix as long as nothing else is broken. Of course you may take the opportunity to free up some more horses driving

I'm gutted for you Rob frown.

The Sag was awesome around the track at Llandow wink

Anyway it's in good hands down at Dulfords smile

Not sure about Neil Garner though. They are just up the road from me, but I much prefer to go down to Dulfords because Richard has many years of experience with TVRs and rebuilt/upgraded my Speed 6 to 4.0L thumbup.

I'm not at all sure if Neil Garner has that same experience of the speed 6 engine rolleyes

If you're using your Sag on track, do check that you're getting top-spec components and a meticulous build. Hopefully Dulfords have changed their approach and learned to do that now, they're a helpful team, but they weren't able to with mine over 2 years and 5 rebuilds frown

5 rebuilds in 2 years! yikes

What did you do with the car? Is it a road car or principally a race car

Road and track. I do about 15 speed hillclimbs & one-lap sprints each year, plus 2 trackdays and about 6k road miles. It's used at full throttle but always fully warmed up etc. The original 3.6 had no probs doing this for 3 years, and my current engine has now done 10k with no probs. smile

The current engine was new from the block upwards, and the builder was able to take his time and be thorough, which to be fair were things that Dulfords were not able to do.

Ah, Ok. I find sprints and hillclimbs tough on the drive train as much as anything. I am struggling to decide whether or not to get a car with a speed six engine. It would be for road use only, so probably not much full throttle stuff

For your use then, in my experience go for the 3.6 engine, preferably 2004 or later, many have now done 40k+ with no probs at all. You'll miss the V8 grumble, but S6 is a glorious sound in a different way. This was my 5-litre G33, somewhat missed, but the T350 is better on road and track in many ways.

Sorry gone a bit off topic!

I forgot that G33 used to be yours. I might keep the G33 anyway and get a Tuscan to go with it for when I want something a tad more civilised.

Had a full rebuild and upgrade to 4.0L in 2007 as my Tamora was built in 2002. Done 19,000 miles since and one track day recently at Llandow. The engine seems fine and have had no problems with it so far and do 6K a year but don't do Hill Climbs or sprints !!!

I'm aware that upgraded parts and a new crankshaft were used for the rebuild and the oil ways were expanded aswell. No reason to doubt the integrity of the rebuild at the moment.

I'm a tad concerned as to why you had 5 rebuilds. Is it 5 FULL rebuilds, or is it that some parts weren't up to the stress's of full throttle during the hill climbs/sprints and have had to be replaced ?

5 engine-out issues, varied causes from new chain snapping to headgasket, all sorted as a priority by Dulfords. But unfortunately in public view at TVR sprints & hillclimbs which doesn't help our TVRs' image of course.

It was mostly full-throttle and high rpm that exposed any weaknesses, as you suggest, but I've never yet over-revved an engine and it always had fluids at right level etc. On track I always listen carefully for detonation/pinking and use octane booster to give extra margin of protection, as these engines are prone to this even with the best ignition map.
