Which engine oil and why?
Discussion
Hello people, I have done some research on what engine oil I should run in a 2000 Tuscan Speed 6, which has completed very low mileage.
I have been advised on several options:-
10/40w Semi Synthetic
10/40w Fully Synthetic
0/40w Fully Synthetic
5/50w Fully Synthetic
10/60w Fully Synthetic
I would appreciate peoples opinions on what engine oil they use/recommend and why.
Thanks

I don't get it, 10w-40 Mobil 1 is for high mileage cars. I use 0w-40 Mobil 1 and have had no troubles so far. Reason - my own choice, but on the logic that it is a thin oil and having an almost new engine. Will use thicker oil as the engine wears more.
+1All added to by the fact that my Owners handbook says: 6000 miles on - Mobil 1 0W40. I just checked.
i use Shell 5W/40. I seem to remember that getting recommended by a number of people.
I found this on the net:
The low viscosity, rapid oil flow and low friction of the product ensures easy cold-starting and greater fuel efficiency while the shear stability of the product ensures maximum protection at the normal operating temperature. This product was developed in conjunction with Ferrari to ensure your engine is clean and protected allowing your engine to work at maximum performance...

0-40 is way too thin for the Speed 6 as its tolerances aren't tight enough. It'll disappear out of the exhaust pipes in no time!
I've heard the only reason Mobil 1 0-40 Fully Synth was specified in the handbook was because TVR got a job lot deal on it.....hence the different specs in later handbooks. I'm surprised TVR would do something like that.

Well mine hasn't, been in the car for 8 months and not a drop has been used.I've heard the only reason Mobil 1 0-40 Fully Synth was specified in the handbook was because TVR got a job lot deal on it.....hence the different specs in later handbooks. I'm surprised TVR would do something like that.

Str8Six used 5w-40 fully synthetic when they serviced mine. I have some Silkolene 10w-50 that I used to use in my Impreza, and I'm going to put that in soon, just to see if I notice any differences.
Edit: Having looked up Mobil Synt S, maybe what str8six used was only semi synthetic.

As the oil is the most critical protection our engine parts have, I'm sticking with the same recommendation you have, from the engine builder that TVR employed to rebuild the early failed S6's to be reliable. Edit: Having looked up Mobil Synt S, maybe what str8six used was only semi synthetic.

10W50 is way too thick which means that it will flow less, and I've learned the hard way that oil flow is critical on these engines and can easily be reduced by minor mods or poor build tolerances, with disastrous results.

I thought that TVR Power did the engine rebuilds and they use / recomend 10/40 semi synthetic.Based on their confindence to provide unlimited mileage warraties on their rebuilds I for one will stick with that until someone with Doms experience convinces me otherwise. Can only speak from my own experience but (touch wood) 2 x 30000 mile Tuscans and a 35000 mile Sagaris seem to have faired well on a diet of the above.

I have also changed from 5w50 to 5w40, engine much quieter when cold, i think oil coming faster to lub oil points. Due to low oil temps 5w40 should be more than sufficiant for this engine and pressure is still good!
Flow is more important than pressure, because the flow takes the heat away!

I think you will find that 5w50 is exactly the same as 5w40 at cold start up. 10W50 is way too thick which means that it will flow less, and I've learned the hard way that oil flow is critical on these engines and can easily be reduced by minor mods or poor build tolerances, with disastrous results.
