I have some oil weaping out the cam chain cover on the front of the engine, coming from the rotating bearing which drives the alternator and bits. Is it possible to remove the cover in situ or is it as I suspect and engine out job?

Just replaced oil seal on mine with engine out,but I don't see why you couldn't do it with engine still in car by removing pulley and screwing a couple of self tappers into seal and pulling it out.Done this before on other cars and its worked ok.Hope this helps.Regards,Steve.

I had the same leak and it is possible to renew the outer seal without taking the engine out or even taking the chain cassing off. You will need a seal kit (I got mine from Racing Green) then take the alternator off and remove the pulley wheel and bearing housing and you can then slip the old seal out and renew it. Its about a 4 hour job as the pulley is a sod, I used a 2 arm bearing puller to ease it off the key way.

GOOD LUCK. email me on milllodge@gmail.com if you require any more info or you want a recommendation on who can do it for you depending on where you live.

Thats if its the back seal, the front seal is even easier, especially if you dont have aircon. pop old seal out and gently push the new one in. Simples....

Thanks guys for the advice. So the front seal comes out, I couldn't see anyway of it removing. No a/c on my car either.

No A/C means you dont have to mess about taking the pulley & belt off. As said you can screw in a self tapper then use it to leaver the seal out, or do what i did and gently tap a small flat blade screw driver between the seal and the casing alittle at a time and prize it out.

When installing the new one, clean the shaft well with some wet and dry to get the surface rust off, a smear of oil will help it slip on, just make sure the lip is not turned over and the small spring ring is inplace before equally tapping it in till its flush.
