how much is the thrust bearing meant to be pressing the forks when clutch is engaged (pedal not pressed)?

If it's the same layout as the AJP then its not. If it does (as mine was when I refitted the bell over the clutch) you need to look at the slave seals. When they swell up the slave piston doesn't push back very well and the release bearing sticks out and at best just touches the fingers or at worst hold the clutch patially disengaged. the seals cost peanuts, worth changing them.

If it is completely different to the AJP layout I'll apologise and get my coat.

Release bearing should not be pressing on clutch springs/forks this will cause clutch to not disengage fully as well as knacker cltch plates/forks/release bearing
