Is my engine on its way out

Hopefully not!
On tickover, aircon off, my engine happily ticks over for a point then the revs drop dramatically before climbing back up. It doesn't sound good at all. Both fans are clicking on and off and temperature is reducing ok.
Oil pressure is fine and all fluids level appear ok.
I gave her a bit of a blast last night and noticed white smoke came out of the exhaust followed by a not so pleasant sound from the engine.
It's going in for a few minor niggles in a couple of weeks but am I to fear the worst.
