Really need some help with this one.

Story is the alternator belt started to slip and then it basically "burnt out" and shredded. I switched off and back on again and got a "Code G " error on the pod (No connection to water temp sensor). I limped the few miles home with a voltage of around 11.2 - 12.2. I have replaced the alternator belt and have checked all the wiring to the water temp sensor, which looks completely untouched. I now have the ususal 13.5 - 14 voltage. I have disconnected the battery, which reset a previous/different error code but I am still getting the Code G error??

Doues anyone know what are the consequences of running the engine with this error? Will the fans come on for instance? I can tell if the engine is getting hot by the oil temp but can't garauntee I will not get stuck in traffic on my way to a dealer.

Any assistance gratefully received.

I am also going to post on the SP6 forum.

does disconnecting from the battery for about 30 minutes not do the trick?

I disconnected the battery for about 5 minutes.

Wouldn't have thought the ECU could hold it's memory beyond 30 seconds?

I think there is two temp sensors, have you checked the wiring to both? the belt may have hit the wire pulling it off/damaging it when it shredded.

Thanks.

Yup there are two sensors,

Apparently the front one near the alternator is for the guage/pod and the rear one for the fans.

I have checked them both, but everything looks OK. The fan belt shredding must have caused some damage to the front sensor wiring though as the temperature guage shutter is not working and the LCD temp display reads Zero as well, which correlates with the Error Code G. I will check more carefully tomorrow.

Hopefully the fans should still work if I have to get it to a dealer.

Can you link it to a laptop to see if the sensor is damaged at all?

Yup, I do have an XP laptop.

I have been meaning to get the cable and software, so I will have a look at doing this if I can't see anything more obvious.
