This may seem like a really stupid question but why do people have, or are told to have a full rebuild when the followers have worn?

Why not just replace the followers for the newer versions and be done with it? If its a case that when they go the do other damage then why not replace them before they wear to the extent that they are a problem? They are an in-expensive part compared to the cost of a rebuild.

Please enlighten me!

depending on the year of build there is also the following that may need attention:

Valve guides
Valve seat inserts
Cams
Half time bearing
Timing chain tensioner
Auxiliary shaft (altenator/aircon drive) rear bearing
Head gasket/head stud washers

As track car intimated the cost of removing and replacing the engine is high. Therefore the general consensus would seem to be that it makes sense to address all known weak points in the engine at the same time. Hopefully avoiding a need to pull the damn thing out again in the near future.

Its simple. If the followers are worn it means that a lot of metal particles are in oil and that particles wear out cams, bearings, valve guides etc. Just changing the followers is a fix for a few months. That was done on my engine by a previous owner just before I bought the car and in lasted 1000 miles until the full rebuild was needed. I was angry because it was in the middle of the summer. But I knew that it will have to be done, despite the owner claims that there is no need for it. But just changing oil showed a lot of metal particles on the magnetic plug.
