Hi Guys, I'm looking for some advice, for some time now my tuscan has been smoking out of one pipe after a run and when in traffic. it was getting worse so I have started to investigate. I have taken the plugs out and the back 5 are fine but the front one is black and sooty/oily.
So it looks like a problem on the first cylinder, my question is - Is it worth changing the valve stem seals? if so can this be done with the head still on?

I have done simular changes in the past with the head still on by presurising the cylinder with an air line, i'm just not sure if I can get a spring compressor that will fit under the cams. all thoughts welcomed

Have you checked the throttle bodies are all adjusted correctly, it may be as simple as the front one is not the same as the others, or it could be a doggy plug lead or plug, all worth checking before a strip down as they are cheap to do and could save time and money.

Thanks kev, i will double check these, I was intending to swap the first and second injectors over to see if this helps. The engine has apparently beenn rebuilt TWICE and is only 32K. One was a factory rebuild so I am hoping it is not a valve guide issue.

Just for the info, mine has been re-built 3 times, all free and by the factory, last time was in 2003 and it has now done 51 thou and seems to be still going strong, good luck with yours, all is not always what it seems, and we always fear the worse in most situations.
