Who do you trust to work on your car?
Discussion
Firstly, as this is my first post, hello everyone <waves>, now onto the serious stuff...
Having recently bought a Tuscan with a rather annoying tapping sound I decided (despite two supposedly reputable TVR garages telling me it was nothing to worry about) to take it apart myself. My first step was to re-shim it (13 valves incorrectly shimmed) and then upon restarting nasty tapping was still there. At this point I found out that apparently my engine was listed as a 'problem engine' by the local specialist!
I was a little unsure what a 'problem engine' was so decided to have a peek for myself. Once I've started poking around it strikes me that a bunch of monkeys may have been let loose in teh engine bay, there's rounded off nuts - allen bolt heads, the casting on the timing chains has pieces missing where it's been levered, the bolts on the cam covers have been put back in the wrong place resulting in ones too long being wound through the casting and that's just the start of it....
Anyways....to cut a long story short how many of you feel your garage knows what they are doing? This, according to 2 TVR specialist garages is not a problem!
(oh dear, will try to work out pics in a min!)

That finger follower in the bottom of your pic looks totally F*CKED, thats most likely the real reason for the excessive tapping noise, also reckon the cam lobe (or more) will be shot. From the looks of the cam bearing there has been a lot of crud in the oil as the bearing surface is badly pitted & scored.
Having experienced 2 disasters with my engine (original build and then a total rebuild messed up by .); I settled for a second total rebuild by STR8-SIX and JC there certainly get my thumbs up.
However from what you describe and the pic, looks to me like you been fed a bucket load of bullsh*t. Can you go back to the salesroom with your evidence?

I`m getting a full 12k service done on the Sagaris in about 2 weeks by the only recommended TVR servicer in Ireland (Torque flyte). He's one of the 4 or 5 listed by a few of the 'old boys' in these forums as the best...
He's an extremely decent guy who takes the time to exlpain things to you and is extremely honest in what he charges.
I`m going to sit with him whilst he does the work on the Sagaris and have a good look at whats going on, after all I bought the Sagaris to get under the hood

After being fed a shed load of bullst on a number of occasions from numerous TVR dealers and so called TVR "Specialists" I would have to say I'm the only one who I would let mess around with my car! At least if I fk it up I'm not being charged for the pleasure!
I like (and share) your thinking, have you had to delve into the bottom end yet? If I have time this weekend I'm hoping to drop the sump off to look up from underneath and see what's going on.Jediworrier. I would recommend that you strip and check your engine. There has been a lot of metal particles going round your engine before they reached the oil filter. At the very leased you are going to need finger fallowers and cams replaced. Dont forget to clean out or better still replace the oil cooler, oil pump and also the gauze filter in the oil tank. Hard to believe that a dealer thought the noise that must have been there from the damage in the picture was not a problem. Once again bad dealers give us all a bad name. Best of luck.

I'm sorry for being nosey but I didn't relise this had been done by anyone.
It's a very long boring story which I couldn't post on here anyway but if you look at my first post on this thread it might give you a clue......I'm sorry for being nosey but I didn't relise this had been done by anyone.
In summary it was a complete fk up! And its taken me ages to sort it out myself(and its still not sorted yet).

Might be a bit late by now in posting this, but if the engine is still in the car then you wont get the sump off. The sump has a casting at the flywheel end that goes around the crank. (If I was on my own PC I would post a pic). You need the gear box off, the clutch and fly wheel off then you can fully unbolt the sump....jaw dropped yet....? It's true believe me I have had mine in bits. Oh and its got sh*t loads of silicone around this part of the engine too.Sorry but its an engine out jobby to do just about anything other than take the damn cam cover off...
