Hello,

My T350's speed6 is fairly noisy, seems the generate a noise which is hard to describe, bit like a 'chatter' or 'tappety' noise once you get to around 2.5k revs but gets quieter once the oil temp gets above 80o.

I have read loads of posts with respect to these speed6 engines being fairly noisy anyhow and some posts concerning "sewing machine" noise which is normal.

I'm getting really paranoid and don't know anyone else with a speed6 to compare against.

The car is fantastic though, never overheats, never needs oil and never needs colant - performance is spot on and I always follow the warm up procedure (car is at 20K miles, service done at 18K, report was spot on).

Thanks, I appreciate any guidance.

B.

Hi,

I`ve the same issues with my Sagaris, I`m concerned about how it sounds and the classic 'sewing machine' noise that they all have.

My sewing machine only occurs really when cold (below say 45c oil) and only apparant at above 1500rpm.

Its heading for a full service in 3 weeks so I`ll see if the adjustments make any difference - its just crossed 15k miles.

Does anyone truely know what causes this noise and why it only exists (or sounds louder) when cold?

get it checked, mine made a sewing machine noise that was considered quite normal. It now has a loud tapping sound coming from the back of the engine and I am expecting either exhaust cam or fingers needing to be changed frown however at least I can go for upratted cams smile

Mine has overtones of sewing machine too. Considering mine is essentially a new engine, I think it's safe to think that it's just how the engine is.

i have come to this conclusion, after 4 years of owning my tuscan and a re-build at 28,000mls (currently at 43,0000mls)that if you can hear the engine tapping quite a bit over the whirring sewing machine noise when hot and with the roof on then it either needs the valve clearences sorting or you have other more seriouse issues, mine tapped when i bought it but i thought this was normal and the valves and shims had been recently done before it blew, your valve clearences should be checked every 12,000mls or before if you are concerned about the tapping getting louder.mine were way out last service and could of done some damage it left any longer and the engine was so much quieter after it was done.also they can check for any sign of wear while doing the valves.

is it normal then to be able to hear the tapping when the roof is off? Mine can be heard only with the roof off, but with the roof on it doesnt seem audible? I am a little paranoid.

And me, Luckily i got it before it did any other damage than wear a follower. The clearance was ok, the follower had actual worn where the cam ramps up not where the clearance is checked.

Oh, sorry, I misread the earlier posts.

Sewing machine noise - normal
Tapping noise - *not* normal. Get it checked out.

If it's more like a tapping noise then it's the top end, if the top end clearances are fine then they are fine. However sp6 engines do have a metalic sound, the 06 sag with 5k on the clock that i test drove sounded exactly like the 04 t350c with 20k on. Mine was more of a chattering sound especially on over run and was diagnosed as noisy timing chains.

The S6 has two common modes of failure. Both to do with the top end.

1.
Tap Tap Tap = worn finger follower = broken finger follower = debris in the oil scavenge pump = jammed pump = broken oil pump drive = zero oil pressure = well knackered engine = expensive rebuild.

2.
Sewing machine noise gradually gets louder = sooty exhaust pipes = blue smoke on start up = worn valve guides = using lots of oil (e.g. 1 ltr every 250 mls) = detonation because of oil in combustion chambers = burned pistons = rebuild.

The S6 is a pretty simple engine and it will normally give you plenty of signs before the worst happens.
