Hi guys

Just got a 4ltr Tuscan, it had a full engine rebuild late 2004 and was just wondering what sort of noises it shouldnt be making. It makes a very faint tapping sound on start up but this then goes away however there is quite a lot of engine noise (My previouse cars have been toyota's where the engine is sound proofed). I am guessing a lot of the sounds I am hearing is due to it being chain driven and not belt driven...

It will make quite few noises when cold, but I have been told that if the engine sounds very quiet then that is the time to worry, if the noise sounds rattley on idle, press the clutch down and if it goes away then it will be the release bearing in the clutch that is the noisy bit, it is not a problem though.

On your next service have the valve shims checked.
Keeps the tapping sound to a minimum.
Its a noisey engine anyway due to, as you said, the chains.

Happy driving

In order, from ignition

whirr behind you - fuel pump
burrrrrr - internal (ventilation) fan
clatter - cold engine
sewing maching - warm engine
very faint whisper - screen cooling fan
louder, intermittent, hum - cooling fans
pops, bangs, neeeee-ow noises - you having fun

Did I get them all ? What do I win ? biggrin

biggrin

I think you missed out an additional noise at the last stage:

The strange whine from the left-hand side of the cabin...

That last one is dependant on the identity of the passenger!

I did have a new noise to day...it could only be discribed as childish giggling seemed to happen at around 6800rpm biggrin

Thats a good one laugh I got puled over today and I was really scared at first because i was pushing my TVR hard just a half a mile back. So he must have at least heard mewink
But he only wanted to see the car (It's the only Tuscan in our country) he didn't even bother to ask for the driving license. So after the 15 minute long chat he wished me a safe journey and I left him with a loud roar and a cloud of smoke from tires - it was his wish.
