This has been bugging me a for a couple of weeks now...my oil pressure light is coming on but only when in fifth gear. Always when I've given it some pace and then back off. The thing is, the light comes on when the gauge is saying the oil pressure is between 5-25 psi.

There's plenty of oil in there, any ideas? Also, does anyone know how the light is triggered, is it pressure within a certain range that sets it off?

If I am reading your thread correctly that your oil pressure is reading between 5 to 25psi when your in fifth gear so presuming your speed is say 50mph minimum , you have an oil pressure problem either your engine is not holding the oil pressure or your oil pumps are faulty which in either case is serious. Hopefully its none of them but you should get a test done asap to determine if your engine is not or is holding its pressure. What oil are you using and how old and what mileage has it done.

I cant remember but is the oil pressure gauge in the Cerbera mechanical or electrical if it is electrical it could possibly be the OPS

Edited to say I hope you dont have a st nights sleep now because its probably a £10 fix.

Cheers mate!

Might help if I give a bit more detail..but I don't know what oil is in it, as its the same as when I bought it (its very thin though, maybe 0W40?). On my drive to work I hit a stretch of the M25/A21, I put my foot down in fifth and then balance the throttle (its at that point the light comes on) and the gauge still has a steady reading, no sudden drop.

What I don't understand is how the light can come on when the gauge says 25psi and stay off when it says 10psi?

The oil pressure light is engine speed related eg. at 2500 RPM the oil pressure should be more than 25psi, sounds like a faulty oil pressure sender best to get it checked out.

This may sound silly at first but,

Does the low oil pressure lamp come on when you select reverse?

If the reverse switch is faulty or incorrectly set up it also comes on when in fifth gear.

The reverse switch is known when faulty, to back feed other devices, in the wiring loom causing this and other faults.

I suspect there is no problem with the oil pressure

Also does the hand brake lamp dull illuminate when the horn is presssed?

If so it's the reverse switch!

G smile

Turns out its definitely not the sender as I've just swapped it for a new one. Looks more serious so I think I'll have to book it in and hopefully try my chances with the warranty.

One thing that gives me hope is that the thing hasn't gone bang yet when it shows almost no oil pressure at all?

well, dropped the oil out today and refilled with Castrol Magnatec 10w40. Took it for a spin and I'm getting a pretty constant 45psi when moving, lowest is 10psi on a hot idle; no sign of the pressure light yet.

I'll see how it goes.....

Have you checked the gauze filter on the oil cooler. It can get blocked as Graham will shed some more light on if he reads this.

10/40 is the way to go on run in engines I think anyway.
