is a speed six engine that has done 40K+ without a rebuild - fully serviced and maintained - likely to be a "survivor" as it were. Or do folk have experince of engine death at any mileage - it is an early model late 2000

Depends on the year it was made.

Engines after mid 2004 seem to be much better (in terms of rebuilds or going bang)

I'd be inclined to take it to an S6 'expert' to take a look.

Just had a bad day with my Speed 6. Oil is pissing out of the head gasket.

In my opinion I would run as fast as I could away from a 40K engine. It will be about to south any second and cost at least £5K.

Unless it has had a rebuild with a year and has outstanding warranty I wouldn't touch one and I own one!

Agreed, but if the car is a bargain and you get it checked could be worth a punt. Have money ready for a winter rebuild regardless of failure. If you want it as an everyday car, keep looking for one with known rebuild history, though this is no guarantee as I can testify.

Sorry to hear about the headgasket John, hope not too much damage (engine and pocket)

if the price is right I would take a chance but be preapred to spend the dough for a rebuild and consider it a bonus if you don't have to have one!

Remember, if you have priced it in, worst case scenerio is you get a rebuilt engine you shouldn't have to worry about for two years.

There are alot of bargins around at the moment with recent engines so for me the price would have to be very good.

Mine is also late 2000 - my final rebuild was 4 years ago, since when I've done 50,000 miles with no significant problem.
