I'm doing research into the Speed 6 engine for Sprint. I'd be interested in anyone's personal experiences. I've read through this forum and there are lots and lots of opinions and 'I know a bloke who . . .' but what I'm after is the full SP (so to speak) on what happened to you.

You can PM me or go directly to deputyeditor at tvrcc.com (I'm told this way of putting it stops spam).

I'm after facts of course. Mileage, costs, how the problem was solved, did it reoccur. I'm looking especially for experiences over the last three years but anything will be of interest and useful.

The only thing I don't want is opinions of the design of the engine. This is purely owners' experiences.

2001 Tuscan S.
After 34,000 miles on the original engine, the valve guides became very worn causing excess oil to leak into the combustion chambers. This had the knock on effect of causing pre-ignition at high revs and damaging 3 pistons over time. Engine was using about 1 ltr of oil per 200 miles. Incidentally the cams and followers were not showing any signs of excess wear.

Fixed with a full rebuild at TVR Power. Cost 5.2K incl. VAT

late 2003 T350, at 24k miles last year my engine also developed excess wear on the valve guides leading to high oil usage, it made a terrible noise and on strip down it was discovered a piston was damaged and a cylinder liner had started slipping, full rebuild at tvrpower, now at 30k miles going strong.

Had a Tamora for 10 months, early '04 model. It's done over 30K, 4K by me. When I brought it, I am told that it's had problems.
Since then it's had a water temperature sensor fail, a worm value shim and a degrade HT lead. Cost about £150 to repair, as part of a service.

Get between 23-28 mpg on long runs.
Service costs between £370-£620.
No noticable oil use.
Water temperature can a bit high in jams.

My 2000 Tuscan had a TVR rebuild at 35k.
I bought at 70k and had an immediate rebuild due to valve guide wear etc.
Dropped a shim in Germany shortly after getting her back but shut down straight away stopped any damage. Had to get her shipped back to the UK for repair.
Since then 12 months and 12k miles later just had throttle bodies upgraded with roller bearings. Running and sounding great.

I take your point, but much of what is said in relation to the SP6 is subjective and often just informed opinion. Derek has asked for facts and to be honest that's all I'd be interested in reading about. I also think it's fair to say that the TVRCC has a duty to its membership to keep everyone abreast of SP6 developments, particularly as in recent times there have been some real developments - I'm thinking here of Power's warranty and now Wilder race-proving their engine, not to mention satisfied customers from Austec and of Jason Cleggs.

Fairy snuff ..I take your point too

Derek's in a privileged position and as he says, he has a wealth of information from reliable sources already on all things TVR but as sure as eggs are eggs he won't be telling you the way it is on here or publishing it in Sprint if it is a big negative re engine rebuilds from Power Austec etc .Most pay for advertising in the mag for Gods sake.

Where the hell do we get a fair and unbiased opinion from?.. not here

All things good come through as a positive..until it goes tits up ..then what?

Negative posts aimed at the same Dealers, engine builders etc is a no no.

As far as your comment re satisfied customers are concerned there are others out there that don't
hold the same opinion..but as you know they are stifled.

Email is the way to gowink

05 Sagaris, 22K. Not a problem...honest. I am the second owner, I know the first owner very well and he reports nothing major with the motor. Gearbox out twice when new as it stuck in 5th on long runs, new aluminium rad and apart from that nothing.
I will comment though that I feel the comments on PH are unfairly negative. Stand back now as I am sure a million responses are heading my way...but....this is a super car for saloon car money. The SP6 engine can be driven, as I do, low on revs with enough torque, crawling through town, and then opened up for the blast that I would NEVER be able to afford otherwise. Sell your TVR's, buy an Italian or German thing and see what it costs you. I want my TVR buried next to me though the keys will be in my pocket!

Cheers all,

J

My first TVR was a 2001 Tuscan 1 4ltr.This car was purchased with 8500 miles on the clock in 2004,having already been rebuilt under warranty by Bedlington Motors.I drove the car on a regular basis following the warming up procedures etc. and doing approx 4 track days per year.I had reached 32000 miles and the car was using a lot of oil 1ltr per 400 miles and then on a journey home from work ,while travelling in a 30mph area accelerating in second gear to filter into traffic, the engine let go.This resulted in a large hole in the casing which rendered the engine as scrap.
I managed to find an engine from a 2004 t350 which had been written off by accident damage, and this was installed in the Tuscan. This engine having covered only 3500 miles was a peach and has not given any cause for concern.
I have since purchased a 2005 Sagaris with 8700 miles from Racing Green and have travelled 4000 miles with the engine .This car and engine is by far the best vehicle I have owned and although the clutch recently went ,this was replaced under warranty.
Considering the performance potential of the speed 6 engine I believe the engines from 2004 and earlier examples professionally upgraded and rebuilt by the many excellent engineering companies available to us privileged owners of these machines, have now given more peace of mind.
We must always remember that All TVR's are special and that not everybody should own one.
Somebody has to buy a Porsche.

Ps.My wife has a Griffith 500,which I also enjoy.

05 Sagaris - 14k miles, seen 2k of those in last 8 weeks (since I bought her) - no problems (touch wood) except for the Gear box being a little sticky (Shes a bh to get into 5th when not moving - i.e. to get into reverse)

I suspect the Gear box will be out before the AutoProtect warranty wears off in 10 months smile

I have had my 2001 Cerbera Sp6 from new, had 3 rebuilds and not paid for any, I got loaned the famous green (Clarkson 4.3bv) Griffith while being sorted once, now got a 2003 spec head on and has run ok since.
Don't mind saying what I know Derek but not on here if you are interested.

Derek - see the following thread.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Mine was rebuilt at 10,750 miles, at app 22 months old, in Aug 05. Only one owner before me, a PH-er as well. Engine rebuilt under warranty by the factory, and per Racing Green, was the 1st/one of the first 3.6li's to go in the South. Took 4 weeks for the rebuild to be done after I wrote to NS and RG put some pressure on as well. Mileage now 30k. The written response I received from TVR stated....

"valve seats were found to be burnt out. The engine was therefore stripped and rebuilt with a reworked cylinder head including cams, valves and followers and also new con rods, crank bearings and piston rings were fitted"

Derek, I wasn't sure if the "or otherwise" meant you also wanted to hear from Sp6 owners who had NOT had any problems. If so, then my 2003 3.6 Tuscan has 27k on the clock - no rebuilds or problems with the engine - still on original clutch.

Had my Tuscan from new since October 2005. Currently 26,000 miles with no issues at all. No noticable oil usage. Still on original clutch but the slave cylinder seals have been replaced at the last service.
