Hello ello,

I've just bought a cerb speed 6, and need to see how much oil its drank over the last couple of days. Unfortunately, my dipstick is confusing me...there's only one groove about 2 inches up, no max/min lines. Am I to take it this groove is an optimum level?

I almost can't believe I'm asking this, think it might be me who's the dipstick!

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Yes, the notch shows optimum. The end of the dipstick is minimum. Should be around 1 litre difference in the marks I think. Make sure you always check it when good and warm as soon as you can after switching the engine off and only dip it, don't screw the cap in (I don't anyway...)

No its not like that one, its just a plain shaft with one groove on it. If the groove is optimum, how far up can it go without being too much?

Cheers for the help guys

You have to check the oil when the engines warm. It's very, very inaccurate IMHO.

I had a digital dial installed to keep an accurate measure of the oil pressure. Once it drops below 40 at 4k RPM, I know that some oil is needed. Usually, it's at 45 at 4K.

Personally I check the Oil on the Sagaris every week (and water too, as it uses more water than oil)

The dip stick is only about 10 inches long on the Sagaris but as with everyone I test it when shes warm (60c oil)

My engine temp doesn't normally get up to more than 65C unless I get stuck in traffic fora while, so when I check the oil it's usually between 60C and 70C.

I checked using the normal method a few weeks back and the oil was showing at about half way on the marker. I then checked a day later after being stuck in traffic and temp up to about 93C and it showed pretty much above the maximum mark. It was actually quite hard to read as the oil was very thin so I'm worried about how accurate it actually is.

So what should I take as a correct reading? Don't want to be running low!

Also, I'm assuming that from the minimum to maximum mark is about a litre of oil?

Cheers!

Just a simple question:" What if you measure the oil level when cold AND it is above or around the maximum level?"

Answer A: It's OK
B: It could be OK and certainly enough oil
C: Wrong measurement
D: Overfilled if that is possible
E: They all have that sir

Dunno if this is right or wrong, but I check when hot as per usual method.

However, sometimes it's not as convenient to check the oil hot before a long journey. So on those occasions I check it cold, unstarted.

If there is no oil showing on the stick I add some until it climbs up about 1cm or thereabouts. If I then subsequently check when hot it shows happily up to max.

Yep thumbup me too

If you leave the car for a few months a least a litre will eventually drain back to the engine sump

Bit of an update...I've been checking the dipstick constantly to make sure there's enough oil (I think its burning quite a bit judging by the smoke!). The oil level was about an inch above the groove on the dipstick, which I assume is ok.

My dipstick looks like this, anyone else got the same? (Orange line is where the only groove is)
