Has anyone ditched the standard airbox and replaced with 6 K&N style filters?

I know there is a carbon airbox available, wondering if this is an alternative.

Cheers,

Tom.

ETA: Sorry about the spelling!

Yeah, thanks, I was wondering if anyone had gone the other way.

Cheers,

Tom.

I asked the question couple of years back. I was advised to stick with the airbox. Did a few searches on the subject which backed up that advice.

Airboxs that arent restictive and have cold air ducted into them from outside the engine bay should always win out over individual filters as the engine bay heat soak will affect the air temps entering the engine with adverse results. the airbox and ducting give a form of termal barrier to the engine bay heat when taking the air from outside the engine bay.

Also the airbox apparently acts as a plenum chamber to some extent, though not as much as on an RV8, so the flow upstream of one throttle pot is kept moving through the box by the pull from it's neighbour, etc. smile

The TVR standard Speed 6 airbox is pretty good airflow wise. It's just badly made, fractures and is generally not square (thus letting in unfiltered air).

That's why we developed the carbon one. This had the flow rates upped by careful design and trumpets helped me make 12 bhp extra on a back to back test. Not a lot for a £1k but the finished product is beatiful.

Ah - was waiting for your dyno results Richard! 12bhp very good if conditions same - back to back runs I assume? Took some work to fit mine - even the revised version - but worth it. Trumpets and longer intakes looked right & certainly seemed perkier on road from 5k rpm torque peak upwards smile

I was really pleased when it got run up, but we had fitted iridium plusgs, new leads etc so I cant categorically say hand on heart that it was all the airbox, but that was the only material difference.

We spent some time getting mine right as well and on reflection perhaps I would have not started making carbon bits with the most complicated moulding going.

OK thanks for answer & honesty Richard. Still, it couldn't fail to further improve on original.

Perhaps a customer will be along shortly with a back-to-back test. sonar

It's a lovely bit of kit, but I have other things to fix first!

Cheers,
