On turning the engine over there is a high pitched noise which I can only describe as like someone running their finger nails down a chalk board. My guess is that it can only be the starter motor or possibly the alternator.

Any ideas???

Also in anticipation of it being one of the two on the way out has anyone attempted to change any of these parts? I found a posting on the replacement of the alternator but nothing on the starter motor.

Is it a belt slipping? Im pretty sure the high pitched squeal I hear when starting the car is a slipping belt. Only ever does it when I start the car from cold.

Sounds like belt slipping to me. Mine was doing it a little when cold starting but it was corrected at the last service.

its not the belt slipping. The sound is high pitched followed by a crunch as she fires up.

Sounds like starter to me.

I've put details of alternative supplier for starter on the part number thread if you decide to change it. Dead easy. Just about to update my earlier posting on hot start issues.

Its not the fuel pump is it?

You say that it makes the noise then a crunch when it fires up, the fuel pump makes a high pitched noise when it starts.

This is just a guess as ours makes a noise when it starts and its just the fuel pump.

when you disarm the imobiliser you get a high pitched wherr as the fuel pump primes, then a lower pitch wherr as a flap some where (not sure what) moves
