Forgive me if this is a post that appears to often, (i assume it may be however I have been through the first 10 pages of post's but didn't notice this subject)

I was wondering what oil i need to use in my Tuscan II S?

My owners handbook says to use Carlube Triple 5W 40 Fully Synthetic, I have been advised to use Mobil 1 but cant seem to find a fully synthetic Mobil 1 with this grade. It looks like Shell Helix was used during the cars last service (from the invoice). I'm only wanting to buy 1 ltr or so just incase i need to top the oil up at any time...!

Also, I have put close to 1600 miles on my car since purchasing 2.5 months ago, I check the oil regularly and have noticed that in this time the level has dropped only the smallest amount (if anything), I was expecting to have to top up more often as I was advised to check oil weekly. What is the norm with respect to this.?

Many thanks in advance.

Mobil 1 is fully synthetic oil, although if Shell Helix was used at the last service it would be better to top up with the same.Later Speed6 engines seem to use a lot less oil than early ones.My 06 Tuscan S has hardly used any in 6K miles.

How many miles had the car done? Car would normally go onto fully synthetic only after the 6000 mile service.

Any good quality synthetic of a similar rating will be fine if you've had your 6K service done.

I was the same as you, i thought the oil would need topped up regularly but have done over 20,000 miles since i've owned it and only had to add a smidge in that time! Check it regularly though.
Mine now runs on Mobil 1 15/50.
Might be worth having a look through opieoilmans thread at the top of the T350 forum.

Car is an 06 and on 7200 miles, had the 6k service.

Think i'll just get a litre of the shell helix maybe as that what was used in the service.. (i believe)

Anyway i'll keep checking the level but may not have to top it up at all until its changed on the next service..

Still.. I've heard a lot about mobil 1 though.. it's got to be the best, performance car engine oil..? Formula 1 etc etc..

I swear by Silkolene Pro-S 5W40. Not cheap, but probably the best oil available on the market. Do a search on here for Oilman and he'll give you all the technical jargon. From what I recall, the likes of Mobil 1 are not 100% synthetic, even though they can legally call themselves fully synthetic! This Silkolene stuff is the real deal!

Since I've had the 4.0L engine upgrade to RR spec in April this year I have not needed to top the oil up at any time. My original speed 6 engine (2002) needed topping up with oil quiet regularly, so I agree later Speed 6's use alot less oil.

That's interesting, can anyone verify if this is sound advice? If it is, what's the reason?

Cheers

i think they may have said that as my car has only done 2,500 miles. so when its done more than 6,000 miles you swop on to fully Synthetic oil? why is that then?

Guys,

Thanks for the advice, pretty varied though which is unusual..!

Anyway bought myself 1 ltr of Shell Helix, 5W 40 Fully Synthetic just to use the same as whats in the car.

Whats the thoughts on Carlube oil...? My Tucan Owners Handbook states the Carlube products should be used i.e. TVR recommend Carlube.. Strange that no one seems to actualy use this.... scratchchin

Burn..

TVR probably just recommended Carlube because it was the best deal for them at the time. I very much doubt the decision was based on specific oil performance, more likely economics.

That's not to say Carlube is no good - having never used it, I am not in a position to comment. I certainly doubt that TVR would recommend duff oil, especially on S6 engines where good oil really is important.

Personally having heard that BMW had problems with mobile1 and their Mseries engines I would go for Castrol 10/60. ITS already been commented upon by Ian at Torque RVT that he has never seen 31 psi on tickover on a speed six, before my car went in.Regard Simon.

another vote for Silkolene Pro-S here, I run our 06 Saggy on that and Pro-R in my Elise - top stuff and really reduced oil consumption compared to 0/40 Mobil 1

I use this oil as well and thoroughly recommend it. It made the engine run much smoother, particularly on start up, when I changed over to it.

lower oil P is not necessarily a bad thing.
Oil Pressure is a measure of resistance not flow, and in the S6 i think think flow round the engine is very important, lower oil P usually means that the oil is travelling faster round the engine
