Engine Re-Build
Discussion
My engine rebuild cost me £8000, and I had it done at Dulfords.
There are many cheaper options out there for rebuilds, but to get the job done properly you have to be prepared to pay for it.
I chose Richard at Dulfords because a thorough job has been done on my engine rebuild. The original engine was completely stripped down, oilways expanded, and rebuilt (converted from 3.6L to 4.0L) with upgraded parts to 4.0L Red Rose specification, including a new upgraded crankshaft.
I am thoroughly pleased with the work and the engine should now last the life time of the car, if treated properly and with respect.
The extra horses is very noticable, and the ACT Carbon Fibre Air Tight Air Box is an improvement to the engine on top of the already improved engine performance.
I got slagged off on this forum by one or two people(who are not TVR owners) for spending so much money on upgrading my speed 6 engine, but when I drive my Tamora with the extra performance and reliability, then it makes all the effort and money spent worthwhile, and I have'nt stopped grinning since.

Good man. There are many cheaper options out there for rebuilds, but to get the job done properly you have to be prepared to pay for it.

a 3.6 rebuild is about £5500 at tvr power. that's with new cams and a few other bits which were originally supplied in a cheese like material.
Also IIRC, TVR Power are offering a 2 year warranty on their rebuilds. The 3 names that seem to crop up regularly i.r.o rebuilds are TVR Power, Autocraft & Austec.Have you considered an engine swap as opposed to a rebuild - presumably this would be cheaper if you could source a later spec engine ?.

Hey mate, you don't have to explain anything to anyone! As far as I'm aware one can spend one's money however one wants to and if it makes you happy then good for you!sportsracerandy said:
This has a probably been asked before but i would like to know how much a full engine re-build is? and where is the best place to go?
Many Thanks
Many Thanks
janspeed norman who builds the engines there is one of the best around, been there years, dont know if mark would want to get involved with them but that company been round for a hell of a long time, so must say something.
after months of reading forums and speaking to people on the phone, im glad iv given my car to Power, not only because some horror stories from others but the 2 year guarentee means so much when spending £6.5k. they have my full trust and seem like a good company to deal with (other than the rather dull tone of the receptionist)
im having it upgraded from 3.6 to 4 L and the head modified to red rose spec, i had 340 bhp and im told to expect 380-390 horses, i dont know how conservative they are with these quoted aims but if my car pulls like the sagaris iv had a shot of then ill be happy!

Graham, don't forget that extra torque. You'll never need to feel you have to push to those mega high revs like you have to in a 3.6.im having it upgraded from 3.6 to 4 L and the head modified to red rose spec, i had 340 bhp and im told to expect 380-390 horses, i dont know how conservative they are with these quoted aims but if my car pulls like the sagaris iv had a shot of then ill be happy!
Don't forget to ask Dom about the running in procedure. You might be surprised by Dom's method.
yes i forgot to mention the extra torque, the most noticable difference between my car and the sag i drove was how easily the sag took off at half throttle, my car needed revs and lots of them
as for running in, iv heard 1000 miles below 3500rpm is common and after the oil change let loose, i assume possibly 300 miles of low revs and gentle driving is probably enough then cane it, otherwise they won't bed in properly, as you would with a normal car.
what were you told?

Out of interest - how much extra over a "normal" rebuild is the upgrade to the 4ltr and RR spec? So, for instance, if a warranty was paying for the main rebuild, but you wanted to pay for the upgrade yourself.
This is all theoretical for me at the mo, as my T350 seems fine (famous last words!) at the moment, but it's always nice to know the information you hope you never need!!
Ropey.

When i was at power in my last car T350, (had run it in for 1400 miles at that time), Dom told me to drive it like normalas for running in, iv heard 1000 miles below 3500rpm is common and after the oil change let loose, i assume possibly 300 miles of low revs and gentle driving is probably enough then cane it, otherwise they won't bed in properly, as you would with a normal car.

For info, it seems the various S6 engine-builders agree that TVR's RR spec for the head & cams of a 4-litre was only to change the cam timing to the same as the 3.6, giving more valve overlap for higher power further up the rev range.Otherwise, the head, valves, cams, and exhaust manifolds are the same for 3.6, 4.0, 4.0S/RR.
