is it poss to get an assessment of the state of wear of my SP6 and the liklihood of needing to spend (big) money on it in the next 10k miles?

Who would be able do such a thing and what would they do?

Thanks
Bert

Give it to me for a week and I'll thrash the knackers off it and let you know how it feltsmile

They would compression test it for a start. You could get the oil analised for metal particulates which would be very revealing. Check for a good service history, look for smoke, oil, steam or petrol from the exhaust. Check for clutch slip etc. Inspect the plugs for even colouring on each cylinder. Look for coolant leaks and pressure test the system and cap.

You could assess it.

Compression check
Valve leakage check
Oil Pressure check
Valve clearance check
Spark Plug inspection

All of these things would give you an idea of it's current health.

fluid drop test in the bores to see if the bore on the down stroke are egg shaped at the bottom. This will test if oil will get past the rings when the engine is not under load, say at idle...

Remember to remover the plugs however to get rid of the wanted fluid, and if some is draining, the do an oil change afterwards

I would have thought a rolling road session would be a relatively cheap place to start before you get into more expensive areas. I know rolling road results are subjective, but I would have thought it will give you a good indication of the state of your engine.

Remove the cam covers - check for cam wear, finger follower wear and chims that are very thin.

Oh, mileage as well, it will only ever do 25,000 to 30,000 between rebuilds.

My 2001 S6 is now at 33,000 without a rebuild.

Frazer, I'm 3,000 the best assessment of this engine so I'm laughing!
