Ok, i've got the cam cover off to check head bolt torque and seem ok. But i am a bit confused as to why the engine has to come out to change the head gasket as quoted by dealer? I can see no reason why the head cant come off with engine in the car? Any one know what the reason is? Hopefully wont be needed tho. Thanks Dave.

Thats why I asked why when you said it was a specialist job on your other thread David..

Speed 6 engines are just engines, I think dealers have hood winked us into believing they are some kind of F1 engine..

I have just stripped one down to the crank and I cant see anything to technical yet. read

Oh and the speed six will come out the top with the gearbox attached. yes

yeh, the figure of 2k + vat does seem a bit over the top, even if the engine does come out. I was surprised that ppc (ex TMS) wouldnt do the job tho. I think that the front timing cover is an issue with removing the head in car but should be ways round that. Could it stay on and take the sprockets off the cams? As long as the timing is marked carefully. but yes, you are right, its just a big simple lump, certainly compared to the mg vvc motor i've just had a new head put on.
I'm going to phone round on tues to see what others charge. Still hoping its not needed tho. Whats happened to your engine? Sounds like youre going down the DIY route, good on ya!
