How often should you have the tappets checked?

Its recommended @ every 12k service. If you drive your car hard and do a lot of trackdays there is no harm in getting them checked @ 6k as most dealers only charge you if they require adjusting.

I'd get them checked every 6k. And whilst your at it, check the cams for small pitting or other wear.
