I expect this topic has been discussed but comments would be appreciated.

I have a 'Y' reg 4.0L Tuscan. Before that I had a Chimaera 450. The engine in my Tuscan has always sounded 'Tappety' after my experience with the V8.

The car has now reached 15,000 miles. I keep reading postings on this site about engines that fail and require rebuilds.

I have to admit, I was amazed TVR ever got away with the reliability issues regarding this car. Any other manufacturer would have been forced to correct the underlying problem. (I never had a problem with my Chimaera but I guess this comment is now academic)

I have very little knowledge about the mechanics of my car, but are there advantages in having the engine rebuilt before it goes 'pop'! Is a full rebuild required?

I plan to move abroad and want to take my Tuscan with me. I am not saying where I plan to go in case too many people laugh!. I know there are Chimaeras where I am moving to. Can an average mechanic sort out this car in a foreign country?

Should I take a case of spares? I do not want to finish up with a good looking paperweight!

Your profile does not permit emails so I will leave my response brief:

If you are really interested to know about the failings of the S6 and available options, you will read the threads, this topic has been done to death over the last 2 to 3 years. I intend to take my fully rebuilt S6 (all newly designed parts) abroad, but I personally wouldn't entertain emigrating with an early Mk1 which has not been recently rebuilt, and only then, if to the right spec.

Enjoy the reading...

Thanks for the reply. I have read a lot of the threads. Guess I will be making some calls to Salisbury and the bank manager!

wait till it goes pop, then get a specialist to look at it.

I reckon 70% + of all Speed 6's have needed re-building before 20k, that said my mate in NI has a 40k Tuscan with no problems. I have had two Speed 6 cars, both gone pop before 16k, and were immaculately looked after, run in, warm-up, oil top ups (silkolene fully synthetic race standard sruff), servicing etc.
However the engine when going is one of the truly greats, I watch and wait for a full engineering analysis of how to make this better, clearly that has to start with the head and valve-train, but other bust engine owners have had other problems. Who's going to solve this for all those who want to keep Speed 6 cars running?
Hope someone nails it all soon, I am looking at at least four different sources to sort my Cerbie foronce and all.
Fingers crossed, X.

take the car with you. If the engine blows get it removed and shipped to the UK for a rebuild? Or how about puting a yank engine in !?

I would have said wait and see if it breaks, taking it outside the UK though there may not be such a good a choice to get anything repaired, sending it back would probably be costly too! You could ask some of the companies mentioned in other rebuild posts the "what if question" though which may give you some idea on costs.
